Do you really need to register?
My yak is 10 years old. Purchased out of state. I no longer have receipt. Never needed to register before in other states. Just added trolling motor.

You could get a ticket for not having it registered.  I know a person who got a ticket in the Sacramento Area.
I have two of my kyaks registered to use my Bixpy Jet.

Don’t they renew every two years?

Renewed every 2 years on the odd year.  Those costs are for 1st time registering. registration upkeep costs are less i believe. i should know because I've owned too many boats but I dont remember which ive paid back date fees on or not lol

It would be pretty obvious that you had a motor and no CF #. I don’t know if they would bother about it but I don’t want to take the chance.

On my AI, it's pretty obvious that I have a sail and my boat is more than 10' long, and I've never had an issue...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

Is there a length requirement on motor driven kayaks to need registration I don’t think so. Kayak registration may be something they don’t bother with period. It’s ok with me if you want to take the chance.

Every time ive been stopped they have told me hey that is really cool. or why do you have registration numbers. My trolling motor I designed to be able to take in and out of the kayak. So a lot of the time I am not even using it. I didn't renew the registration. If someone were to write you a ticket for this then that person would be a real asshole and I would gladly tell him/her that If I were the one getting the ticket. It's pretty ridiculous that in CA you are suppose to get it registered. The lady at the DMV looked at me like I was an idiot.

No, but technically Sail powered vessels over 8 feet should be registered in California. That brings up a good point I didn't really think about, but a motor and sail are still fundamentally different forms of propulsion.

While I agree with the sentiment, I'd suggest not being confrontational with the person giving the ticket. There are a lot of options for disputing a ticket, and there is a good chance that you can win, or at least get fines reduced. But if the officer is motivated to get you, such an outcome is a lot less likely.

A couple years ago, I got a traffic ticket for using my cell phone while driving and I disputed it. I used the "trial by written declaration" option, and the officer did not even bother to submit anything, so I won by default. If I'd told the officer that he was a jerk and being unreasonable (both of which were true), he surely would have submitted the paperwork. I still might have won, as I had a lot of documentation, but it's far from certain.
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

If they see a kayak under sail, length must be determined to know if it is legal. A kayak with a motor automatically needs registration. As with most things,  the opinion of the guy with the gun standing in front of you makes a big difference.
