I first pull a gill.  If they are thrashing too much or are on the large side, I'll bong them too.

BTW, a butt that's been bled and bonked can still and will "wake up" 20 minutes later.  Happens all the time ...

You have to beat until it's mother won't recognizes it.  That why I carry a Big Hammer. I bleed them in the water but keep my fish on the deck.  Just pour water on them.

when i boat a fish i usually knife it in the brain, instant death and then bleed it out by cutting the gills. thats the fastest way to do it for myself. when spearing we always knife the fish.
