I hear stories about banned drive in church services,  no sales of non essential items in walmart. No surfing, fishing or even jogging though they are socially distant. What are you willing to give up?

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

Not the shutting down of fishing.

I just had a discussion about this kind of thing this morning. Why do I keep hearing how Trump is going to be a dictator. He is going to do something  bad. He will be terrible. How about dealing with what he is doing rather than whatever irrational fears are out there.

I don't know about others fears but my "irrational fear" is not a fear but is based on the words that come from his mouth.  Any President saying he has total authority is delusional or is leaning toward a dictatorship.   You can spin this anyway you want but it takes first ignoring him at his word.

I'll abide by social distancing because I believe it works, though I hate it.

That's about it. I want to be able to go to the beach and fish, while being socially conscious and distancing from others. I'd like to be able to park at a trailhead and head out into a park without fear of a $1000 ticket.

Actually happening. Democrat dictator.

Michigan is in deep shit.  Michigan has about the same number of cases and twice as many deaths as CA with one quarter of our population.

Get a grip. It seems to me that this is a great question to ask, and by the 2nd response it veers into the looney tunes arena?

Back to the original questions...

I've been following the situation here in Santa Clara county pretty closely--not so much elsewhere, as I've been surprisingly busy. So my comments are only wrt local conditions. What I see in the numbers here is that social distancing appears to have made a positive difference. On the other hand, I don't see much payoff from SIP. If SIP was the answer, we would have seen a spike before it kicked in, and then a flattening. Instead, the numbers have been essentially flat (in terms of new infections per day) since social distancing started. That tells me that we should be moving out SIP sooner rather than later. If it's still needed in NY or SoCal, so be it, but as far as I can tell, it makes no sense here.

Of course, wash hands, keep some distance, etc., but we should be trying to normalize as much as possible within those sensible constraints.

I don't like stuff that sucks.

If you want some good but gruesome reading read up on the Black Plague or the Black Death as it was fondly called, a more dire situation than this by orders of magnitude

The striking thing is how similar the American response is with the Europeans’ (panic, chaos, magic/religion-based) response during the Plague vs how dissimilar the (orderly, science-based responses) responses of the countries who have now kept things under good control in both realms, infection rates and economic carnage

In those countries the public use simple and well thought out practices to keep infection rates down(same practices we have in ICUs) and blood flowing in the economy (restaurants and most other businesses open, bars, music concerts, church services etc closed) Simple and smart

It’s the middle of April and America is still on the Medieval Plan, in all respects

The usual response to this conundrum is that you could never get Americans to comply with the kinds of things these other countries are doing(to everyone’s benefit), which is like saying America has more fools per capita

The bullshit politics should probably wait til this all blows over

The black death came from Wuhan, China.  Why wasn't the "Chinese Virus" name already taken?

Yes yes yes. Right now government at all levels is thinking about what regulations to put in place. Regulations that may not have a normal legislative process behind them. It seems like it's worth paying attention.

Local officials will have a “profound and outsize influence” on any any decision to lift public health orders, Newsom said. He went on to outline six key indicators that will guide the state’s decision as it considers lifting the stay-at-home order:

“The ability to monitor and protect our communities through testing, contact tracing, isolating, and supporting those who are positive or exposed;
The ability to prevent infection in people who are at risk for more severe COVID-19;
The ability of the hospital and health systems to handle surges;
The ability to develop therapeutics to meet the demand;
The ability for businesses, schools, and child care facilities to support physical distancing; and
The ability to determine when to reinstitute certain measures, such as the stay-at-home orders, if necessary.”
Even once the stay-at-home order is lifted, Newsom said society won’t snap back to normal. For example, he said restaurants will likely have to limit capacity and face coverings in public will likely be common.

I heard they lifted restrictions for Santa Cruz
