DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A PLACE TO LAUNCH FOR ROCKFISH STILL OPEN

Well went fishing this weekend.  It was an amazing day on the central coast.  Beach launched both days didn’t come within 500’ of anybody except a couple other guys on the water who were still probably 100’ away asking me how I was doing! Came home with enough fish to feed my family for the next few days.  Also did a dive and came home with some fresh mussels and a few scallops.  Was able to spear a couple rockfish as well!

a lot of you guys may be old and petrified of someone running up and sneezing on you I get it.  But don’t be so quick to judge us that are able to go out into public responsibly and stay isolated from others. 

You can be responsible and still fish especially on a yak and keep your distance.  It’s not like I’m going to alameda the the ARW and lining up shoulder to shoulder with dumbass’ on the rock wall.

Fact is I got a lot of scrutiny from a lot of you guys I’ve met at Albion.  Who I had a lot of respect for.  But Jesus Christ you showed your true colors.  Some of you are disrespectful cunts.  Not a good look to the noobs that want to be welcomed like I once did years ago.  I’m not very active because I had my first child last year but that doesn’t mean you should just bombard me with hate! 

If I was saying “WHO WANTS TO GO FISHING WITH ME” then I would understand the backlash but I didn’t.  I simply asked for a recommendation on where to get out on the water for the first time in 11 months.

But did you wash your hands and put on a surgeons mask before using the gasoline pump? Only urinate into a pee bottle (your wetsuit is also fine) so you don't have to use public facilities ? Use an anti-viral UV decontamination chamber to sterilize any air leaving your vehicle?

If not, well some would consider you selfish. I hope you're able to sleep at night

They would really have to be trying to make an example out of you in order to give you a ticket. It is not as strict here as it is down south or up north. Surfers are not being kicked out of the waters here. I would think the biggest chance of getting stopped would be on the road. "Why's that guy hauling a kayak?" pulls you over to chat

A friend of mine gave me a few tips on where to go in central Ca and I drove there just fine.  Saw fish and game on the water who just drove by and waived.  Parked off the street had park ranger drive by me on the beach as I was pulling my yak down I waived he waived no one cared

I get it, but you live in SR ,and drove how far ,with the "potential " of being a carrier, you could be asymptomatic .And "IF" a scenario  were to arise that you needed assistance then you could "possibly" expose others.

In the "spirit " of the order driving that far is not helping to flatten the curve .

Different agencies and municipalities seem to have different criteria, someone posted a sign from Marin County about not accessing or driving to areas that aren`t local or something to that effect. That`s the only one I`ve seen.

I haven’t left my house in a month.  Not showing any symptoms didn’t come into contact with anybody or anything but my own property.  I went from the inside of my car to the beach without touching anything but my own personal belongings.  Pretty sure there’s no harm or foul in what I did.  I did however see people running and surfing and practicing safe social distancing rules.  It’s nice to see that we can actaually be decent human being and respecting the “laws” of this virus that we’re allowed to do. 

The virtue signalling going on in the bay area is deafening. It is far beyond the needs of the quarantine.

This is a virus. A bad virus, but a virus. Much like some of the worst years of the flu, which is not to be underestimated. That is why we are being cautious. That is why, fortunately, despite that it is more contagious and has a higher mortality rate than the average flu, it has killed roughly one eighth of the seasonal flu. And that is good. So let's build on that. 

But it's a virus, not the zombie apocalypse. Not even ebola. Not even smallpox. If you can go somewhere, not interact, not touch anything other people might touch, and be far away from other folks, call it good. Probably better not to declare it now that we have politicized the quarantine. The righteous are everywhere.

They aren’t virtue signaling. There are multiple problems with that that should be called out.

Virtue signaling is a pegorative term these days and clearly how you I tended it.  It is designed to stifle discussion for a person by being dismissive about a platitude or other hollow act. That is the definition of an ad hominem argument. It is also hardly a hollow act if that person is also practicing the behavior they are advocating, which from my anecdotal observations they are.  Those breaking the SIP order, either legally or in spirit, are by and large the exception and not the rule. There are pictures of empty streets and shuttered businesses filling the news and social media pages. I’d have to guess compliance is over 80%, which is pretty impressive.

We can be alarmed at how quickly people are willing to -even begging to - give up personal liberties, both their own and others, and how dubious the claims of those actions actually stopping or slowing the spread of the virus may be, but let’s attack those directly and not dismiss them in a convenient ad hominem. That’s just lazy.

I think you and I agree on a lot of points. But on this not being virtue signalling, well I'll respectfully disagree.

Just because one is walking the walk while talking the talk, doesn't mean they're not virtue signalling. "Hey, look at me, I'm not going fishing so if you do, you're a selfish person". That, is spot on virtue signalling. I don't think that whether or not the act is "hollow" has anything to do with it. It's the whole "Well, I'm doing A, so if you don't, you're not virtuous" aspect to the statements that turns it into virtue signalling.

And perhaps this is just a matter of semantics, and I'm wrong on the definition of "virtue signalling".  But if so, then should we call it "going fishing shaming?

Well, it's certainly "going fishing shaming".

Maybe I'm wrong, but "virtue signalling" to me has meant a hollow act signalling other like minded folks that you are one of them, but not really giving up anything to do it.  So, if someone in our example doesn't fish anymore anyway, then signals that they aren't fishing during the virus and neither should you, that's virtue signalling.  If on the other hand someone is giving up trips, cancelling their own tournaments, not posting new content on a monetized fishing channel, or the like, that's making a  real sacrifice.  Now it's not virtue signalling, but it's advocating for a particular personal code of conduct that they want to impose on others.  At least that's how I understand the term.

Being selfish isn't bad in and of itself.  I have two guiding principles, don't hurt anybody and don't take someone else's stuff.  By arguing that you need to stay at home and forgoing the fishing trip, people are saying that what you are proposing would violate the first rule.  By travelling and exposing others to potential community spread, that harms people in a real tangible way.  There is further no way to mitigate the potential effects completely because you may need to get gas, you might get in a accident and expose first responders, you might touch a railing or a doorknob or something that leads to transmission of the virus, and even if you do everything perfectly safely you are setting a bad example for others.

That's the argument.

I'm perfectly fine with Wilha taking a trip to the central coast to go fishing so long as he took precautions to mitigate all of those things argued.  I don't care about setting a bad example for others, I'm not responsible for their behavior and won't be made to feel that I am.  As a concession, I won't post about the trip.  Not because I feel responsible for other folk's behavior because I don't.  But instead because its not something that adds anything to the "social" part of this social media.  It instead detracts from it because we end up with threads like this.
