Been noticing reasonable quantities of dry goods are rarer and more expensive than they should be.

On that front, my wiphe and I have been buying larger quantities of staples as it's been a more reliable way to get some things (flour, yeast, rice, etc.).

To that end, if you're like us and not going into stores, https://meh.com/ has navy and great northern beans in 25# bags today (they usually only sell one item/day) for $34 + $5 shipping.

It didn't feel like a stellar deal, but it does seem the going rate on these is substantially higher (cheapest I could find was about 20-30% higher, Amazon was absurd ($85 for identical product/package), walmart had in-store only options, all shipping-eligible options were sold out.

I've used meh a bunch in the past. They're fairly slow to ship, but otherwise great to deal with. Meh is from the same guy that founded Woot back in the day, returning to the original Woot biz model.

Not sure if this is COVID related or not, seems probable?

I got a call from my landlord asking to pull security footage. I installed 6 security cameras at my office this winter because one of my lawyers was being stalked. Well, a garage across the alley was burglarized this week and a number of vintage Japanese tools were stolen. The tenant was heartbroken. I spent several hours yesterday going through footage and boy, the tweeks and prowls were numerous, 1-3 per night except the night it rained. I found a guy entering the garage at 4am, but he didn’t take anything.

Undaunted, I went back several days until I found the thief red handed. It was the middle of the day on Tuesday, and it was the maintenance man employed by the landlord who did it. It was brazen, he acted like he belonged there - because he did. He had to have knowledge of the specialty tools that were there. Ultimate inside job. This guy has worked for the neighbor for years, always polite, I would never have expected it. I thought I was looking for a hooded tweek on a bicycle.

Footage given to the tenant, who was very grateful and apoplectic at once. We’ll get to watch it all play out I’m sure. Stay tuned.

And now thanks to our superb leadership in California, this criminal, no matter what they decide to charge him with, will be released from jail or never booked at all. Gavin, in all his infinite wisdom, has ordered that all non-violent crimes have ZERO BAIL.  That's right, if no-one is dead or seriously injured, the suspect walks out the door as soon as they are booked into jail...because it makes sense to make law abiding citizens stay home while you release criminals from jail.  But make no mistake, this is here to stay. Not to get too political, but the democrats have been trying to get zero-bail in place for years and this was their opening. Thanks Gov!!!

It’s not the gov it’s the voters. Props 47 & 57 basically mandate catch and release for property crimes that run short of arson.

While the disincentives are lowered I don’t think that’s the main problem. People are more desperate and higher/tweekier due to the pandemic and responses to it. There was another brazen tool theft today from a local electrical contractor. Van stolen and tools stripped out of it then abandoned.

That very van is in the video I pulled and was doing work on my building at the time of the theft I caught. probably just a weird coincidence, but maybe not?

prop 47 and 57 Definitely contribute to the problem but nether of them have anything to do with bail schedules.
