I've worked with the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, and have fished that area from larger vessels many times, and I would NEVER fish that reef from a kayak, no matter what time of year or what the weather conditions. same with Point Piedras Blancas down on the south coast.
IMO, there are just certain spots that aren't worth it. I've seen more than a few whiteys off the Central Coast in my time.
Bean Hollow to the north or Davenport to the south would probably be a better option. Yes Davenport has had more attacks over history, but that area also gets surfers in the water. A day doesn;t go by where there aren;t at least 10-15 guys out there. Ano is a different story. There are only a handful of breaks out there, and very few guys ever surf them.
Livin tha pirates life full time! Catchin big cbass in tha kelp all summer long Have fun, live well, conserve the resource, and ask me about my secret fishing spots. but I probably won't tell you, cuz their secret!

I think tempting fate at a place like Ano is nuts, considering there are so many other good places to go.  You don't want to die at a place like Ano only to be on the news being described by some expert pinhead as a "fool".

Weather permitting I am at Elk or Point Arena.

I was thinking about hitting salt point or somewhere in that area on the 3rd or 4th.

I'll be free on July first, and I'll join a crew to fish either Davenport or Bean Hollow. I think I'll take a pass on Ano Nuevo. I'm pretty rational about small the small risks of shark attack, but why go where the chances of an attack seem greatest? Lots of other fishy places; let the landlord have that one!

Let's go get em!

Hey Art what day are you going to try the ritz and what does the launch/paddle look like?

My dad is in town and I am trading yaks with polepole so my dad and I will be paddling the triple. A beach launch or a long paddle is not something I want to tackle with my dad and a big ole yak.

It'll be either a beach launch in minimal surf with portage or a 5+ mile paddle from the harbor.........not for the faint of heart.  I was camping at the pelican point campground (around the corner from the hotel) last year at this time and the launch was doable, a sit in kayak launched with no problem.  I'm also gonna scope out the beaches to the north and maybe get out for a yak surfing session......(Dave, John and Joel seen my act......not pretty :smt003 )  Obviously, I'm gonna watch the weather/bouy readings and if anything looks iffy I'll pass but this spot is worth a recon trip.

It does not look like any sizable swell predicted after this weekend so hopefully that is good. I am doing the harbor Friday for sure after that I am going to play it by ear.

looks like a basker to me, but maybe my brain just prefers to think of it that way.

OK,
Here's a pict I saved from someone on Coastside last year.  This was off Ano.  You may come across this anywhere in the ocean, but more common where sea lions are present (ie Ano).

BTW, I'm sure we'll all agree that this one is no basking shark!!

I'm not too fond of seals when they're hanging around me while I'm fishing, but I must admit I felt sorry for the little guy :smt010

I know how you feel - but - it's "natural selection"

The fishing off Piedras Blancas lite used to be splendid and the launch off the beach where it meets the hwy just to the south was protected from the prevailing swell....that was 30 odd years ago before the elephant seal invasion and the biologists took over the facility from the coast guard.
That place is resplendant with fish, each in it's season.
You'd have to be braver than sensible to take a yak out there now.
I lived a couple of miles north of there on the west side of the hwy for 20 years. That place finally fell into the ocean and I'm still mourning it.
