Hi everyone,
I am trying to select the right ugly stick for bottom fishing for rockfish, smaller lings, dabs etc. I ordered an ugly stick gx2 7.0' in medium and another in mh. They're rated at 8-20lbs and 10-25 lbs respectively but the lure rating is under an ounce for both of them. Do you think this will be an issue using them to jig bait with 4 oz weights? I wanted a lighter rod to fight rockfish a bit. I have been using an older mh ugly stick and tidewater rod rated much higher and the fight hasn't been all that exciting.

Let me know your thoughts
Thanks

Those should work great! I actually use a bass rod for shallow water rockfish. 8-14# but thats a little too light

It’ll work but you’ll find yourself doing a bit of the work with your arms when fighting big fish or multiple fish in a day.

Many members like the Shimano Trevala.  I picked up a Daiwa Harrier M 6’4 and 7’0.  Love them and are under $100.  Strong backbone, fast action light tip, and overall lightweight.

Go and get a 7ft ML trevala. It is the most versatile rod I have and just works. My second suggestion would be a 6.6 M trevala.

The ML works well for weights around 4oz and I usually use it from 2-4 oz. the M I use for up to 6oz. I’ve also used the ML for downrigger fishing salmon, live bait halibut and stripers, and fishing for mackinaw.

The Diawa Harrier rods look good, but I have no experience with them.

Also use a bass rod for “shallow” bottom fishing (40-90’)

I think it’s rated to 1 1/4 oz, and I usually fish 2 to 4oz leadheads.
Also, the light uglystiks are super fun to fish, and hard to break.

Have fun out there!
Aloha,

Isao

Thank you everyone! Maybe I'll keep both ;-) I was going to return one or the other based on feedback.

I tend to stick towards light action rods. I have 3 different ugly still gx2 rods, ranging from light to medium heavy all are 7 foot I think  and I have trevalas as well. I honestly prefer the gx2's for everything from Cali Hali to ling's. Can't beat em for the price. Especially when u can buy 2 for cheaper than a trevala

I call 7 foot MH a "poor man's trevala." I've used 8 oz jig without any issue.

good to see some ugly love.  I have had some people laugh at me when I paddle out with my "white tips".  seems my $40 rod catches just as well as their $400 rod.   :smt003

But then again, I fish for the recreation and relaxation.

Yeah it's amazing how judgemental people can be. I have ugly sticks ranging from ultra light to heavy duty that are my go to rods. For whatever reason they seem to always outperform my much more expensive rods. Thank you everyone for the input on rockfish ugly sticks.

Also glad to see someone else with the seaghost on here

I've got more ugly sticks than non-ugly sticks.

7 or 8?  Mostly bass/trout rods.

my favorite cliff/beach/shore rod is my 8'6 SST ugly stick, has caught many rockfish and cabezon from 50+ foot cliffs, caught one 36" bat ray in Marina ( that was easily the upper limit of the rod )

I haven't tried to find the ugly stick that would work jigging, just because I borrowed a Shimano trevala one time and fell in love with it, so for me, if it ain't broke. don't fix it.

I did borrow a MH White tipped Ugly Stick in Crescent City for the PBOA tournament from my partner which caught my still PB black RF, and my then PB lingcod along with two cabezons that were just shy of my pb to that date.  and if it was M or ML, it would have been perfect for me.

I agree that the fish don't see your gear nor do they care how much you spent on it either.

I picked up my Seaghost at Headwaters  :smt006 during their demo day over a year ago and I am very happy with it and my white tipped rods.  (Full disclsoure, I also have a Pfleuger spinning combo and a bass pro baitcast combo.)  I really like my baitcaster because it has the adjustments for both brakes on the outside (no flipping it open needed to adjust).

It's what I could afford to get me into the madness.  I'm still a noob when it comes to kayak fishing, but each trip out I learn more and am starting to catch more fish.

I probably own a half dozen or so and I love my Stiks. Everything from little trout and bass rods to a couple of their heavy BWS spinning rods. I even have a few that were my grandpa's that became mine after he passed away. They're probably pushing 25 years old and they still fish great. I would love to own higher end gear but I just cant justify/realistically afford it. And I love that I can beat the crap out of my Ugly Stiks and they fish just as well as they did on day one.

Check out the Ugly Stick Tiger Elite casting rods.  I have one which is 6'5", medium heavy, and rated for 3/4 oz.-4 oz, jigs, and another which is 7', medium heavy, and rated for 4 oz.-7 oz. jigs.  They have a lot of spine and are my favorite rods for jigging for rockfish, ling, and lake trout.

I prefer stiff and/or fast action rods for jigging (a) because they help me jig precisely within a couple of inches of the bottom, (b) because they are sensitive to even very light bites, and (c) because they let me set my hook instantly when I get a bite.  When you jig with a light or soft rod, as you lift your rod the rod bends and loads up, and then it flips your lure up a long distance in a manner which is difficult to predict.  Large sweeping jigging action is effective for some kinds of fish, but I prefer the control over the action of my lure which I get with a stiffer rod.  And when you swing up a light or soft rod to set the hook on a fish, the rod bends before it starts to pull on the hook very much.  I prefer the sharper hook set which I get with a stiffer rod.

Another reason I like the Tiger Elite rods for jigging is because I jig with the butt of my rod in my armpit, and with that hand behind my large capacity (300 or 400 size) baitcasting reel where its thumb can operate the reel's spool release. My other hand turns the reel's power handle.  This technique is easier with a rod with a really long butt, and the heavier Tiger Elite rods have a really long butt.  The 3/4 oz. - 4 oz. medium heavy Tiger Elite rods just have a moderately long butt, so to make the rod handle the way I prefer, I added 6 inches to the butt of the rod.
