Hi guys,

Curious to understand what most people are targeting (besides Dungeness) between January-May, when groundfish closures are in effect. I was assuming mainly flatfish? With that being said, is it still okay to just catch and release groundfish from a boat if you claim to be targeting other species?

I’m assuming you mean saltwater fishing. I hang up my salt stuff and go freshwater fishing  :smt044

Sturgeon, stripers, topline trout, bass bass bass, crappies, oh and those wonderful elusive monster steelhead  :smt007

I originally got a kayak to bass fish, and since I've gotten a hobie I think I went once?  the allure of the salt was too much, and still have yet to hook up to a single freshwater fish on a kayak.

would be super sick to hook up with any of yall for some freshwater action.

No, it's not okay to target out-of-season species. Give 'em a rest until the season re-opens.

No, it's not okay.  You will either need to move locations or change your fishing setup.  If you continue catching RF/LC, then you should probably stop fishing for the day.

Makes sense, thanks for clarifying!

Appreciate the responses. Looks like I'll have to pull out the old freshwater gear this spring!

Agreed.
I think this would probably be at a wardens discretion so if they watch you catch a bunch of rockfish and release them, they could cite you for pursuit of a closed species.

You are a sand dab... Go sand dab fishing! No limit, open all year. We will drop a couple of traps then catch some dabs, go back and pull the traps. I love those flatfish, they freeze fine also. We usually start getting them around 100-120 FOW. Good luck!

I would actually love to go san dab fishing, sandy botton, 100-120 foot?

where would one usually launch from for these delicious suckers.
