Hi NCKA

I want to know if I'm reading these conditions right. I'm planning to launch Thursday 11/14/2019 at Rockaway Beach but I want to be sure I got the swell info correctly. By afternoon it should be good conditions? I've been looking at NOAA, Magicseaweed, Surfline, etc. all day its nuts haha. Let me know guys and help a newb out. I'm trying to make sure I read these charts correctly.

  • Have you practiced self-rescue?
  • Are you dressed to survive prolonged immersion?

If so, those conditions are fine, presuming you have your other safety gear and know how to use it. Recommendations: practice in the surf zone with your kayak before heading out with all your gear, and stow or tie everything down when launching or landing. Flipping in the surf is no big deal if you've prepared for it.

Everybody will have their own version of what safe conditions are based on their own personal experiences.  Best bet is to be prepared for the worst case scenario and "When in doubt, Wait it out!"
Don't let others pressure you into going out into conditions that you may not be comfortable or prepared for.
Good luck

Find a group to go out with , create new fishing buddies for yourself . Personally I hate fishing alone .Yes the forecast looks good.

Ultimately, you gotta take a good long look at the launch conditions.  Give yourself 15-20 minutes.

See that 2' @ 21 seconds at 3PM?  Surfers may be all over that.  A long period swell like that stacks up on the reef or the shore break, or it may not even show up...

Afternoons, in general, are the windier part of the day - no matter what the forecast says.

The best way to learn to correlate forecasts with reality is to go see it very often.  It becomes an extended study of sorts.  You look at the forecasts multiple times as they change over several days, and then you go see what conditions are like in person.  In order to develop expertise with this you need to devote a great deal of time and resources to it.

I try to incorporate forecasts vs reality into my reports, because that correlation is always a factor in my trips and there's so much for all of us to learn from each other's experiences in that regard.  It can be a real time eater, but just reading through lots of past reports can be very enlightening.

Best of luck, FishyDaddy.   :smt001

I think this looks pretty good!  The south end of Rockaway seems to always be free of surfers and big waves. Ping me Wednesday afternoon and maybe I can join you Thursday morning in a noob-a-thin fishing session.

That's the first thing that stuck out to me when I saw this. I'm pretty sure those stars represent surfing conditions on Magic Seaweed.

But I'm also not familiar with that launch.

Hey All

Thank you guys so much for your input and advice. Everyone has been very helpful. I apologize for the late reply it has been a long and busy work week. Anyways I appreciate the info and I have decided to find not just a day with good conditions but try to find some buddies that have some experience with fishing that area. In the mean time I'll have to just use my wet suit, splash clothing, and VHF radio in the reservoirs, lakes, and rivers in the mean time haha. I'll also keep on practicing self rescue. There will be that day to get my experience in the big blue and I'll make sure to record it with my go pro. @LoletaEric hey man thank you for taking the time to let me know about the longer swell periods and the surfers I have to take into consideration as well but you are all correct about going out there physically and observe the water and compare to the graphs and charts of the tides. I'll for sure take that in consideration. I think what I'll do is just bring my yak and surf fishing gear and see what plays out in the conditions granted I study it the days before. When that time comes it will be a go.

Thank you everybody in the NCKA

Thank you again everybody!

There's been days that I went out to Rockaway with the kayak and just spent a couple hours surf fishing instead, honestly not a bad place to shore fish for crab.  the surfers usually stick a bit north of the launch, so you won't have to contend with too many of them, but the surf conditions might be pretty sporty, I was out there this morning and between ankle slappers there were some good 2-3 footers crashing on the south end of the beach even.
