Name that predator.
Was at Nick's cove a couple of weeks ago and saw the most amazing pelican attack.  It went on for at least 45 minutes, moving up against the shore and then out a bit. there were scores of birds. The water is pretty shallow thru here.
I assume there was a large number of anchovies being herded, but I don't know what was chasing them.  I didn't see any seals in the water so I assume it was halibut or salmon but there are probably a lot more halibut around.  I used to fish a good sized run of coho in the bay years back.
Sorry for the fuzzy pictures. I only had my iPhone.
I was out having an anniversary dinner and fishing was out of the question.
Any one ever fish conditions like this or know what was happening?

Are there a lot of stripers there? That would be my guess, having seen similar scenes a few times around the Monterey Bay...

That area just north of the launch is just a few feet deep. Definitely seems like a striper thing to do to corner a bait ball in the shallows like that and pick them off.

My guess is stripers too, saw the same thing going on a month or two ago by Hog.  Even saw a big one (maybe around 10-15# class?) hit some of the bait at the surface about 10 feet from me.  I didn't catch anything that day because I suck at fishing Tomales.   :smt003

Just saw this happen this afternoon.  Some bait school and all the birds were going crazy.  School moved too fast before I could get there and toss a swimbait.
