I started this about two weeks ago and except for some paint and wiring she is road ready. Thanks to the talent of my cousin Ronnie(and patience) we took my old trailer for my aluminum boat and made it into a Kayak hauler that accomodates four kayaks plus all the equipment.

We extended the tongue 4' and moved the axel up 3' from it's original position. By making the tongue longer it gave me the capacity to load 17' kayaks with no overhang. By moving the axel up the trailer has great balance for pushing around with the added crank wheel not attached to the front.P7050075

We then added a 9" high basket on top of the trailer so that all the gear is stored outside the vehicle and added a mesh screen to lessen wind resistance and air out wet clothing/gear.

note: that basket has removeable door for easy access.

Also took off the 8" tires and replaced them with 12" tires.
Now the trailer can haul two kayaks in the center with two mounted on the side. Any suggestions or other tricks would be appreciated. Frankfishing

Looks good Frank.
How wide is the wheel base?? You definitely do not it to be too top or side heavy with a narrow wheel base.
Love the top basket.
Sure makes it easy to store kayaks now doesn't it?

This trailer tracks very well and has been tested in the Livermore hills with minimal weight  in the basket. Like most trailers is travels better loaded than empty but moving the axles up and extending the neck has helped with the stability. Your right Tote storing the Kayaks is a snap with only a blue tarp their covered and protected from the elements.
