Been getting to know the Swell "Scupper 14".
Im working on a full rig and review and gathering vid and still shots.
One of the things that I was curious about was if I could roll this boat or will it take more time/training to roll this full size SOT if I am able to at all.

What does the NCKA think?

It's 'based' on the Scupper Pro right?  yes you'll roll.

Plus, it's YOU!  Could probly roll my Predator MX

Thanks for believing in me Bushy!  I'll give the thread a little time before I reveal success vs fail, but I learned quickly that 395 waters are a lot colder to play in than northern cal!

I really don't want to reveal too much about this boat until I finish documenting, but while the lines and chines are similar to the early scuppers, this boat is another creature entirely.

Well Bushy you are right.   Easy success on my first attempt.
My look of shock and awe was a mix of how easy it was to roll this boat and the soul numbing water temps at 8K.  I think it's time to lose the trunks and get out the dry suit or waders before I spend more time upside down up here. My other favorite training haunt is at 10K.

Also have been focusing on the bow rudder with strong results, and sculling, which has been a lot more challenging. Im blaming the hull for my sculling difficulties.

Thanks Mr Hopper!
Coach GoPro has been super helpful in my interest in attempting SiK skills on SOTs.

The person I purchased my Swell from, said it was quite easy to roll with some practice. He was a really experienced paddler. He was mainly into surfing kayaks and whitewater. Not a fisherman. Is it possible to roll a SOT with rods in the rod holders? It seems like it would be dangerous trying to roll with shrimp flys, heavy weights and big hooks swinging around.

My original scupper pro had no problem rolling.  half-way that is.  When I didn't necessarily want it to!

Would be interesting to see a side by side comparison of the hulls.

10K- Saddlebag?

Those boats really needed to have a balanced gear load and were easily influenced by shifting gear loose in the hull, but if you needed to blast through surf, few boats were quicker.
I was also able to roll the scupper pro on the first attempt, but not as smoothly and effortlessly as this Scupper14. This boat fits me into a stronger position.
I'm not able to find a photo of a side view of the Scupper Pro I was paddling but the Scupper14 I can help with.

Not Saddlebag, but I love that place. Good times with Team Bridgeport paddling and trolling across Saddlebag, then fishing 20 lakes basin, and trolling back. Finish the day at the Mobil station for a feast. wow.

I have been spending time on the water "South" of there.

Yes, it's possible to roll a SOT with gear. I wouldn't consider it dangerous for myself , but it could make things complex. I'm not really that interested in rolling the boat when I capsize fishing. Ill just keep it simple and climb back on.  But developing a roll on a SOT is the path to a bombproof brace.
I can say with confidence that my brace is significant, but it is only because I developed my roll.

If I did choose to attempt a roll, while loaded with fishing gear, there are things that need to be considered.
The roll that I use to twist over a heavy SOT has a strong greenland influence and there is a phase where my torso is across part of the back deck. A rod in a holder behind me, on the active side of the roll, will prevent me from getting into the right position to engage and snap the boat over.
Another factor is the fishing line. To help prevent a cluster, you might not want to do a complete roll but use a high brace to bring the boat up on the same side that went over.
It really is all about the big brace.

First attempt rolling the Scupper Pro.
While I wouldn't call this moment effortless, the Scupper Pro rolled better than the Disco.
I did not expect that.  The twitchy Disco was the boat that I had worked hard to gain some competency and I had thought it was the best kayak that could be fast, nimble, and rolled with light and balanced rigging. I was not correct. This is the moment of realization.

This Swell boat is even better.

These are the only SP photos that I have for a boat hull comparison.
For now.
This boat and its paddler was faster than the Disco and I.
There will be a "speed test" between this boat and the S14, but it won't happen until next year.

Beautiful place wherever it is and amazing that you can roll the SOT

Your posts and opinions should be in safety threads

When people see what you can do they take what you say more seriously

Amazing might be a strong word, but thanks for recognizing the level of difficulty in rolling the bigger SOT. Coming from a crafty vet like yourself, sort of made my day. Much respect BK.
I just put in the time and have a belief that if you are going to talk skills and kayak performance in this forum, you should be proficient and knowledgable about both. There is some PROtending happening in the current NCKA culture.

Fully appreciating how special and beautiful the 395 is to explore and fish.
I am fortunate that my path led here.
