Someone posted this info in another thread, and I’m probably late to the party on this, but I figured this should be shared.   Navionics has a free trial for their smartphone app and it seems pretty useful.

Navionics is awesome. Everyone should have it. My brother and I went 6 miles out at Point Reyes in heavy fog one day, navigating only with this app. Foolish? Maybe. But Navionics knew exactly where we were the whole time. Very impressive.

It is. The customizable depth highlight feature in the advanced map options is especially useful. The real time depth adjustment for the tide is cool, too. I've started paying more attention to the app than I do the charts on my fishfinder.

Actually, your GPS knew wehre you were.  Navionics only supplied the detailed view.

Well put. You're right. But the visual interface - combined with the iPhone's GPS - made getting back a breeze.

Yeah.  I have navionics envy.  I gotta update my maps.  Just so much more useful detail...

I went to purchase Navionics Boating USA and up at the top it says "THIS APP WILL BE DISCONTINUED!"

Unless they are only selling the US & Canada version for $23.99.

I use the Navionics app on my phone, but it has a few shortcomings:
- The detail and accuracy of the bathymetry is quite poor in some areas.
- It incessantly nags you to sign up for an account.
- It sucks battery like nobody’s business. If you ever need to use it to navigate home, you’d better move fast.
