Monastery Beach 6/30

Since I hadn't seen anyone catch a Bacaccio before, I thought I'd post a sharper closeup for anyone interested.  Sure has a big, gaping mouth.

We fished near the Pt. Lobos boundary, which was much easier to do since I had programed all the coordinates into the GPS as Waypoints so it was very easy to see our position relative to the boundary lines.

How about sharing those Waypoints?  You got a Magellan GPS?

No, I have a Humminbird FF/GPS.  But I am sure you can just program them into any unit that allows you to record and edit waypoints. 

The first time I went to Monastery Sachyak told us the coordinates of the boundary as they came off a projection from Point Lobos.  But once we were on the water and the prevailing wind constantly blowing us toward the reserve, it was hard to really know where the boundary was and to stay outside it.  This was especially so since the boundary doesn't project directly due west from the shore.  For the second trip, I had looked up coordinates myself, but mistakenly pulled up the following coordinates from this web address:

36° 31.70’ N. lat. 121° 55.55’ W. long.;

36° 28.88’ N. lat. 121° 56.30’ W. long.

So with these coordinates in mind, on the second trip it seemed easier, you just had to stay north of 36° 31.70’.  But Sachyak wasn't there on the second trip and I was confused because these coordinates put us well north of where Sachyak said it was OK to fish on the first trip.

So before the trip yesterday I discussed my confustion with Ark, who had also come on each of my three trips to Monastery.  He pointed out that the coordinates and map I got off the DFG site were for the as yet to be implemented MLPA reserve and that the current Point Lobos Marine Reserve coordinates are the following:

So I programed them in as waypoints so that I could securely fish close to, but not inside the reserve.  I wanted to be cautious since there were two DFG rangers to meet us at the shore on our first outing.  I figured I could defend where I was fishing if I could show them I had the boundary lines marked on my GPS/FF.

          This is where I should have been.
Congrats on " All gettin FISH"  one of those KEEP-LINGS are in my CROSS-HAIRS.

I'll bet you have the most pimped kayak on the ocean with the side scan sonar mounted shoot through hull. Way to go on the legal ling, Etienne also. Great day on the water. Slow day for me with 3 keeper rockies and 2 underlings 22 and 23.5 inches . Had fun with my new big game kayak rod which I just just finished (Calstar GFX 700ML with cork grips). Thanks for letting me see your top secret rigging.

What kind of rockfish is that, the one with the spots?

that one is a starry. they're good looking fish, has a nice pleasent red hue, almost like ripen strabery that isn't too dark.

looks like a gopher, copper jr (tm) and starry (never caught a starry...).
