I fished Thursday on the Grander kauai with skipper Darrin Auger.

It gets so deep there, we put lines in about 1/8 mile ftom the harbor at about 7:30am.

Watched a couple other boats hook up with yellowfin and a marlin.  Our turn came around 8:30, when we saw a feeding frenzy ahead of us.  Huge crashes from yellowfin on skipjacks.

We trolled through and got a triple hookup!  One of the rods was mine.

I fought the fish from the rail, mainly just cranking, pulling the line by hand because I couldn't take it out of the rod holder.  the guy in the chair had a big one on.  My fish came in 1st, 110 pounds.  SWEEEEET!!!!!

then the guy in the chair got his to the boat.  HUGE, shook one gaff.  I had to help the skipper and mate get the thing in through the little trap door in the stern.  215 pound yellowfin, biggest ever for this skipper!

Awesome fishing.  Four hour trip cost $150 + tips of course.

pics below.

i would recommend this skipper to anyone going to Kauai, he'  a great guy, really cares about his clients, and obviously knows what he's doing.  (also surfs the cloudbreaks on Kauai, tow-in guy.  monster!)

You can't really tell what the conditions are like in these photos.  4-6 foot swell, with a 2-3 foot wind chop on top of the swell; and wind steady at 15-20 kts.  Not very yak friendly conditions.

Someone really dedicated could do it for sure, but for safety I think a chase boat would be necessary.

This is the time of year the yellowfin are there in good numbers, also the time of year the tradewinds blow, all day and all night every day and every night.

to my knowledge, no one is doing any kind of mother ship trips over there yet.

Beauty!  Do you get to keep the fish, or do they still do the whacky Hawaii thing where you have to buy the fish?

Everytime I hear about the great open water fishing in great places like Kauai I wonder why I am not living there.  Looks like a great day, and 150 is a good deal.  Congrats allen.

I always thought that the fish is kept by the boat - for them to sell to the local restaurants.
