Allen,

can you tell us about what time of day this was when you were fishing for the halibut?

Thanks!

john

The flatties are stil there.  I think if you can hit it, just go.  Work thebeaches West of Capitola pier.  I don't think tide really matters, but high tide or incoming is probably best.

Allen, No pics? We need to work on getting you to carry a camera :smt004
Nice to hear you scored, I may need to go down there.
I fished Del Monte beach again just south of the hotel, many bites and several squid and sardines bitten in half. Unfortunately the wind was a factor early on and did not allow us to stay on target.

Which beach were you fishing, north or south of the pier? New Brighton might be a good call too. solsrf

the wsb i saw passed beneath our boat. i was about 6 feet from it and it looked to be a good 3 feet long. it was at the surface cruising right under the boat. we were in 23-25 ft of water and just on the outer edge of the kelp at capitola. it was about 1/4 mile towards sc from the capitola pier.

i have the gps numbers where we entered the kelp and ended the drift in the pb. even for a swim it would not be all that far and i thought i may as well try it while i was there anyhow.

what side of the pier were the butts? im thinking of hitting cowells first and then heading to capitola wednesday am. i can be out at cowells by 8 or so and check around before going to capitola.

maybe we can meet up? i can bring an extra belt as well if i have one your size.

I dropped by Capitola today. It was low tide, so not much was happening. The guys fishing on the pier said that there were a few small halibut caught in the morning.

There are also halibut biting in shallow water off West Cliff. I caught one about 50 yards off shore a couple of weeks ago. Today, I was riding my bike there this afternoon and stopped to watch a guy fishing off a long board. He was trolling backwards, using swim fins as propulsion. I saw him catch and release a small halibut in the few minutes I was watching him. He was using what looked like an anchovy, around 20 feet from the cliff, in around 8 feet of water. His technique was to troll in circles around the seaweed piles.

thanks John I'd love to, but after a week off, I gotta get some work done.  The WSB story is pretty exciting.

Hope you keep the offer open for a shallow water go-out, I'd be way more comfortable with a partner than I would be all alone.

Solsrf- the beach West of the wharf....as you're looking to sea, to your right towards Trees and Privates.  Just on the other side of the little promontory rock.  but the whole area there is holding fish.  NB would be a good bet as well as Cowell's.  I bet the beach at 26th near Windansea is holding as well. I watched Mike catch 5 in an hour and Jackson catch 2 in about 1/2 hour.

Good report Ganoderma! Was that at It's Beach or more by Mitchell's?

It was much closer to the Dream Inn, or whatever they call it now. Pretty close to the place that used to have a restroom on the cliff before they tore it down. It was in the wind-protected area toward Cowell's.

sounds like Cowell's or Indicator's which is just outside Cowell's.  Classic spot for smaller halibut and occasional big ones.

on that WSB issue, I have rented the skiffs out of Capitola several times.  My son likes to look over the bow down towards the water as we move around and on several occasions swears he sees large silver fish just a few feet down.

I always figured it was just wishful thinking on his part, but his description sounds a lot like what you all are saying.

I went down to Capitola yesterday evening (25th), and there was lots of crap in the water so lure fishing was tough from the beach.  Drowned a few chovies, nothing happened.  Did see a nice striper off the wharf and a few undersized halis come up.
