Hi all,
I’m nick, long time Bay Area angler and relatively new kayak angler in Santa Cruz.  I keep it really simple and love to throw swimbaits on light tackle from my kayak in Santa Cruz. I always launch off cowells... I mean main beach cough cough and fish the Mitchell’s / mile buoy / wharf area.  Definitely come say hi if you see me out there.  Or if you are looking for someone to paddle with in the area hit me up.  Yellow ocean kayak scupper pro (dual hatches with no tank well in the back). You will know it’s me because I’ll have a rod some swimbaits and that’s about it.  If you are into fish art you can also check out my work on Instagram @subsurface_style

Tight lines,
Nick

Hey Nick!!!

Glad you made it over here!!

Nick is a super cool guy and has donated some of his killer stuff as prizes to both PIF and DOTY in past years.

Nick, I would be stoked to paddle out with you sometime to learn that area more and maybe jump in if viz isn't too cruddy.  :smt002

Jim

Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

Welcome. Is it allowed to launch out of Cowell? I thought about it quite a few times...

Welcome. Is it allowed to launch out of Cowell? I thought about it quite a few times...

You are technically not allowed to launch off Cowells (right side of the wharf as you are looking out to sea) but you can launch on main beach (left side as you look out to sea)  I am not totally sure about the reasoning because main beach often has more swimmers and people on it.  However the wharf does knock down the shore break that can be present sometimes so the launch is usually easier on main beach side.  I typically launch on the cowells side early in the morning if the swell is down and there are no lifeguards there to yell at me and then recover on main beach where it is allowed.  If in doubt just go off main beach side.  It is legal there and you can always drag your boat under the wharf from cowells which has the nice steps and showers

Like every time you start that long paddle back to the harbor?
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?
