I`m curious as to how many members utilize a trailer for hauling a kayak or kayaks versus car topping for the obvious reason/reasons . I know many members like Rob have multiple kayaks for different use or maybe feel paddling instead of pedaling on certain waters.

Did you fabricate one yourself ? Buy a kit ? Order a particular brand or model ,example; like the Malone trailers.

Did you customize it or make modifications ?

Brands , make, models ?

Likes  and dislikes ?

Thanks Spiffy

TRAILERS!!!!! Freakin love em!
Ya ya they have some down sides...
Usually the plus sides far out way the downs for me... I use small easily redneck created stuff for local trips. Also use a big ol’ cargo trailer like Robs “kayak garage” that doubles as sleeping quarters for longer trips. In my old age I find myself needing more and more shit traveling with me like change of diapers etc lol. It really is personal preference and ease of use. If you ever see the kayak “garage” I pull around behind me feel free to take a look inside lol

Here’s my trailer.  Put together a Harbor Freight kit then designed and fabricated the top.  I can store all the equipment for two Outbacks, PFDs, and fishing gear.
When going solo I usually just put my Outback in the bed of my pickup.  Other times I may take the trailer

Mine is a custom flatbed with an old GM axel used for the wheels. I had Fortuna Iron build up the sides, change the hitch, and brace the tongue a bit. You might check out this forum. http://texaskayakfisherman.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=121567

I ran a Trailex 2 position trailer for many years. MANY miles no issues with 2 heavy pedal yaks.

I may be building one for one of you southern brothers this month.

Here’s one I built for one of our NWKA bro’s (pic)

My used snow bear knock off is rusting through so I’ll be building myself a custom one this year as well.

I bought a old 1965 master craft 12'-16' aluminum boat trailer and stripped everything off and rebuilt the bunk boards just to cover up the metal and mounted the hobie PA14 rack. Easy to slide on and off if I'm going to launch using a cart and even easier using a boat launch.

I bought a Harbor Freight foldable trailer and customized it to pull behind my VW van. I used Hully Rollers for the main carrier  and can  put 1 or 2 yaks on that. I can put  a 3rd to the right of that on some Malone kayak holders.  I Usually only transport 1 or 2 yaks though.
l needed something lightweight and versatile. It may not be what alot of people are looking for but it works great for me.

I do all, Car top, trailer, depends on how many of my troop are with us. I built my main trailer on a 4X8 harbor freight folding trailer. 3' box base with risers that can hold up to 8 kayaks. all 2X4 construction and has been awesome for 10 yrs...
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I’ve got a Trailex, which is (mostly) aluminum and comes as a kit that is super-easy to assemble. Works great for my AI. Although spendy, it’s about 40% cheaper than the official Hobie version.
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

most trailers that are made just for kayaks can not be backed into water. stupid design since what they are carring goes in the water. cheaper and easier to just keep an eye out for an aluminum boat trailer. you can pick them up cheap and with very little work have it set up right. I'm just primed mine today. I'll post pics when its done.

Most used boat trailers I have checked out as potential purchases have had serious issues related to being backed into the water! Unless it’s a Pa or other “huge barge” most guys I fish with don’t need to back them into the water. YMMV
