I have a 7 yrs old daughter and it's recommended  for them to not have any/so little amount.
Thoughts?

Questions like this from adults worries me.  Its recommended that you not feed them any or very little, but you come to an online forum asking for our opinions?  I mean, what if most of us were morons and told you to feed it to your child...would you do it?

It is the state of California that makes the recommendation you mention. That would be the same state that tells us (via prop 65) that it knows (not suspects, mind you, but knows) that virtually everything causes cancer. I trust the "morons" on this site more than I trust those morons.

Personally, I would not worry about a migratory species, such as halibut. Sturgeon might be more of a legitimate concern.

On the other hand, eating raw halibut that has not been properly frozen is nuts. A pretty good discussion can be found here:

When some1 asks for others thoughts it doesn't mean he or she will follow blindly what's being said. It's called listening for other thoughts. AND I know several thoughtful folks here ...

Judgement call. As I've been told - use common sense and set boundaries based on the consumers age, and the type and size of the fish.
Halibut being more migratory plus an ambush feeder might make it a better choice than a similar sized Striper. Because Striper tend to bottom feed more whereas Halibut swim up to seize passing baitfish

In the game of biggest fish, if you can't enjoy routinely gettin' your ass handed to you, by great fishermen, then you don't belong in the NCKA.

About ten years ago I had the same false perception that sushi quality fish sold in the store was frozen to kill parasites. I refused to eat any freshly caught fish raw. I purchased some tuna and we ate half one night and saved the rest for the following day. The next day I was slicing the other half and noticed a lot of little white dots in the flesh. Upon taking a closer look I could see they were moving, and looked like little tape worms. I totally freaked out because we had already consumed the other half, and immediately called Kaiser with my concerns. The advice nurse took my information then asked me to wait while she did some research because she had not encountered anything like this before. When she came back on the line she stated that Kaiser had never had a case of someone having fish parasites, and there was no information on what to do about it.

The advice nurse then said lets call Poison Control, we often confer with them when someone eats something we are unsure about. We were both on the line with a woman from Poison Control and she stated that they get calls about raw fish consumption weekly and they had done a lot of research on the issue. Her statement to me was go out and enjoy your sushi, and don't worry about it you are not going to get fish parasites even if you eat live ones.  She did warn me not to eat fish, mollusks, or crabs in countries where they are taken from warm fresh water.

After that my perception of the risk changed, and I do not worry about it

Since that time I did hear of a case where a man got a five foot long tape worm from eating fresh salmon every day.

If you look at all the other species of fish, you shouldn't feed kids or pregnant women most fish from lakes either. They say the fish are toxic due to metals from the mining that was done here a long time ago. Eat fish but dont eat it every meal and the younger fish will be better (less toxic) than a nice big old breeder.

I like how you just as a question and some people chastise you. Just have to weed out the "moron" people's answers. Asking questions helps people get a better understanding of things or think of something differently that they haven't thought of before and is good for this site! Knowledge is power!

The number one issue with SF bay is that the deteriorating sewer system dumps cr*p into the bay non-stop, literally.  This is a FACT coming from a person that is in the architectural field and knows this to be very true.  Will it kill you, probably not, but hey, if you don't mind a little poo in your fish, then go right ahead and enjoy. Let me know if you ever find a peanut in your fish though.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

that guy lives in Fresno lol it was last year that one day he was pooping and notice something strange and started pulling it out and it kept coming out lol he checked himself into the hospital where the doctor extracted the remaining tape worm lol gross...

he was getting his fish from the supermarket so supposedly it was flash frozen. The thing about that is, you don't know how many times it was thaw out and refrozen...hence why I only eat raw fish I catch lol

In regards to calibuts being migratory, does this mean any 'but caught in say tomales or monterey is likely to have spent time in sf bay, or are these distinct  seperate populations?

This would be very interesting to find out.

Is wild fresh caught Bay halibut worse than foreign farmed tilapia, or a Happy meal with soda?

On the other hand, just imagine all the (literal) shit that ends up in the bay.

Kinda couldn’t decipher it but some sciencey guys might be able to nutshell it...I could be wrong but I see it as local populations inhabit their area from ocean to bays and back again.  Some travel far but wee ones tend to hang...help...dry but ok read... :smt006
