I can't imagine dragging 170 lbs into my kayak.  Even though it's only a few inches up, and the friction is much less because it's slimy, it seems the hardest part would be balancing the yak with the fish half in and half out, but it wouldn't have been easy with it in his lap.  He probably had close to a 350 lb load counting his own weight and his gear.
