Here is a simple inexpensive method of making an ama or outriggers for the kayak. Buy rigid urethane insulation foam, either two or one inch thickness. Cut to desired shapes. I use 4 inch wide by 6 inch deep by 4 feet long for a pair of outriggers but they or a single can be much longer. Take a 1x2 inch wood strip. Bore whatever size hole needed for the pipe dimensions. I like aluminum 3/4 pipe. Strong and light. Would not use PVC. Too breakable. Take the bored wood strip and fasten it too the top of the outrigger. For testing before glassing either wrap layers of foam and wood together with duct tape or that thin plastic wrap used to secure many items. This works fine for water testing. Slide the pipe into the holes. If using a single ama you will need enough pipe to extend the distance from the yak you wish with enough pipe to cross the yak where you choose. On Hobies there are plenty of tie down points. On my Adventure for two outriggers I use the "hooks" on the back big "fish"hatch.  Choose your tie down spots and space accordingly. Use bungie cord to lash the pipe down. There will be some give in this system but that is good. Sort of a shock absorb for ocean conditions. If shape, length, and height from water level are satisfactory then glass the foam and double glass the wood runner to the foam. This system works well, is light, simple and cheap.
