I like these blue Danielson crab traps with the top hatch, it does outfish the old black ones when they are side by side.

The top hatch is great when crabbing from a kayak. Be sure to secure the clip for the top hatch with a piece of wire or whatever because the first few times I used it the clip came loose. It is also good to cut some of the bottom of the doors off because they can get stuck in the sand which means less crab. There is a lot of information out there on rigging Danielson traps.

A lot of people prefer collapsible traps though...

If you close the top hatch with wire that defeats the rotten cotton escape hatch and if the trap is lost it will keep catching crabs. It would also be against the current regulations. Better just to make the cotton and/or bungee a little tighter so it doesn't come off.

I think you misunderstood my explanation. I said to wire the "clip" (or hook if you want to call it that) to the cage. If you did that the cotton will still work and the hatch will open if lost.  I tried pulling the clip tighter but it slipped. I think I will eventually use a stainless clip with a thicker bungee...its a work in progress but it is catching crab at the moment.

All you do is leave one side unlatched. Cut up bike tube for a band attach that to the cotton rope, then to a hook . And use that side as a open and close....

That will work fine for the old style but the new blue ones with the top hatch are already setup like that on the hatch. It is a great setup and makes getting crabs out of the trap easy. I really like the new design and I think it catches more crab because the doors are wider but who knows.

Got it. Sounds good.

I also like the Danielson pots (I have the older ones modified as SlackedTide described) because it is easy to shake the crabs out. In my experience it is harder to get them out of traps with flexible mesh.

From a kayak, I really prefer the eclipse hoops unless you're going overnight.

These look cool, similar to the Danielson. I may get these in the future. I currently have an ambush net from them.

+1.  If I had to start all over, I'd go with those promar cone shape traps.  They work really well from my experience.

I should have mentioned I usually drop overnight and sometimes just re-bait them and leave them for a series of days but that is rare on the north coast. That Promar looks cool, I will have to check it out.

I have both the Promar TR-555 folding crab trap and the 32" Ambush Hoop Net.  I have a Revo 13 and prefer the Ambush over the TR-555 because I find it less cumbersome, I like to move my traps around if production is not good in one spot, and I never soak over night.

Walmart had a killer BF sale on the Ambush for $38 but now they're out of stock.

This is my first crab season and I wasn't quite certain how to abide by regulations.  So, it was nice to see the TR-555 folding trap came with the rot cord installed on the latch.

I’ll second the vote for the collapsible promar. Mine has served me well.
