wow. Just seeing this now. I heard the story 3rd hand already in the harbor.
Major bummer for the guys.
I myself made the same error many years ago in Alaska but the guide who saw me allowed me to release the fish and was very helpful once he saw I was not some rando poacher but just an enthusiast who made a mistake (also the river regs in AK are some of the most confusing i have ever seen).
I only mention this since I know how lousy I felt at the time. The difference in my case was one fellow fisherman allowing for a single mistake and seeing it as a "teachable moment", and in theirs some overly zealous researcher who was apparently the absolute wrong person to catch them out. The flat tire thing seems to go against the type of person that would call LEO but I guess fanatics can justify anything.

very glad to get the whole story here, and it is a very good reminder to know your harvest area boundaries.
Sorry for these guys that they got caught up in this, glad they owned up to it and we can all see this as something to learn from. Ta's post here is much appreciated.

and the frikkin MB aquarium isn't that cool anyway. They have poached white sharks in the past, made big $$$ off them more than once. Can't have it both ways IMHO.

My wife works for the aquarium.  She said she hasnt heard anything about these guys being banned from there.  That it is not even possible.  Anyone can walk up and buy a ticket.

Is anyone else even a little bit concerned that some new guy named screwsfish has apparently unfettered access to an entire aquarium full of fish?

I have been begging for years to get a chance to fish the open sea exhibit, she wont even ask for me.  So lame.

I should clarify; I was a volunteer diver for the Aquarium until the article got around. A lot of people know my name, and they know I was in the article, but that's about it. I usually just keep my head down and dive.

Despite the article being public, I wanted to just visit but was warned by a couple colleagues beforehand to law low and not visit the aquarium until this blows over. I mispoke when I said I was banned, I should have expressed specifically not from the premise, but community wise I feel. I know a lot of people there would not appreciate seeing me on site.

It was the work of Julie Packard that got those MPAs in place to begin with. He was caught fishing in her closed area in her neighborhood, of course he’s not going to be welcomed with open arms at the aquarium.
