Ocean cove RF opener.

Lots of sites to pick from, chose the little hole in the wall from last year, Anita and myself got out only for 10 minutes and she was turning green, poor girly-goo, she just dont do well in the swell...
It was plenty of time to land a big canary - pics to follow - so back to the beach and re-configure the tandem and out I went, landed and released 2 blues and a little black n gold, all in shallow water, met up with mudshark and his bud, they did better than I did sat. Only an hour on the water and the wind kicked up so I bagged it.
Sunday It was too low for the PBs to launch, rock-picking low. Didnt effect me one bit and I spent the next 6 hours on the big sweet blue, great fog, smooth clear water, hardly any drift.
Didnt find any lings but easily got my 10 fish limit in no time so I kept 9 and kept at it in the shallows so the released fish were released unharmed, seeking the monster ling...
Last fish of the day was a big copper that made the limit.

no prob. Ben,his name is Kevin.we did good on sat with two good sized Greenlings at 15" and 7 blues to 20".we had A full camp of land lovers that haven't had fish tacos like that so the blues were good for them.
 over All it was A perfect weekend on the salt,it was nice to meet you ben and Anita,as was all the other peeps in yaks this weekend

Hey Ben, sounds like you had a decent opener. 

BTW, I believe that first fish of yours is a yelloweye and not a canary.  Either way you did the right thing releasing it.  That's a fairly rare catch (especially for the shallows), and one I'm still missing on my "fish species I've caught list".

Brian, yup, looks like a yellow eye to me too.  I got one at Fort Ross and 2 canaries as well on 3 successive drops.  All 3 came at 70 feet.  Two swam back down immediately.  One needed a little more time, but she swam back down after some coaxing with the paddle.  I think she made it because I was watching for her to come back up as i was looking for my barbless 6 ounce "release jig".  She didn't pop back up though.  Then I moved because I didn't want to catch anymore of these beautiful fish.

I thought I should throw this out there.  There seems to be a fairly consistent catch of yelloweyes out of Ocean and Stillwater (north) Coves, they are very close to each other.  About 4 or 5 times now I and others have caught a few each time there.   Anywhere from 40-100 feet deep.  They usually come up with there swim bladders inflated.  I usually bring a needle to deflate them.  The juveniles can be reddish with a prominent white stripe.  Just google (images) yelloweye and I'm sure pictures will come up.  Just wanted to let everyone know to be aware around these coves.

Oh and Ben, nice stringer, apparently you know there are some nice coppers around also.

Do those sea cumbers actually attack the jig?  or get caught on the line and slide down?  WIERD!!

Sea cucumbers are slow-moving, mud-sucking bottom creatures related to sea urchins and sea stars (a.k.a. starfish).  My guess is that Ben accidently snagged it much like you might snag a rock.

If you google Yelloweye rockfish, then click on images (search), look at the second picture, and if you do the same for canary rockfish, look at the 3rd picture, those are the best examples.
