Whos got biguns??? Ano Nuevo Sat 6/2

Me and Phisnpat will be launching north of ano from the closest trail I find and then paddling the rest of the way.  Company welcome, ch 69.

i've always wanted to fish here ever since seein the landlord when i was a young man of 18 surfin this area...  think seein him on a kayak is bad, try a 6'5" piece of foam and glass, half submerged just outside the break, this ought to be interestin....

There's a little beach just north of ano, I've launched at once. It's just a little walk off the hwy. It's not marked but I think it's called Whitehorse creek.  I didn't stay out long that day the water got too big for me, and I was by myself. Good luck, I'll be waiting for your report.

Man! I'd totally fish that w/ ya if I was in town. Always wanted to. I also used to surf that and have seen GWS there but I don't think I'd be as intimidated as while on a surfboard... sure I'd still shit myself though! I bet it's fishy as a mutha out there. Good luck and be safe. And don't forget, if it gets really hairy sprint for the island!

John - how did you go at Ano Nuevo Sat? If I heard from you here, you did fine, at least, alive. 

I'm not makin a report for saturday, we had consistent 6' swells mixed on the outside and big and fat north swells formin on the inside of the south side of pigeon pt. 

Originally we had planned on launchin near ano but one guy flaked and my bro bungle had no sonar on his yak.  I opted for pigeon pt since I knew  of some reefs there but it was no good.  The wind on the north side of pp would have blown us from the reef right into the rocks at the base of the lighthouse so we stayed inside on the south side.  Friggin seals everywhere actin strange and bein a little unfriendly if they popped up close to the yak.  At one  point we saw some seals start porpoising and scatterin fast and that was freaky also , Nate landed a cab and a fat black but I was biteless the whole time out.  Two days in a row for me bein skunked.  I'm callin it quits till hmb derby....

I ab dove at Ano Nuevo back in '93 or so.  It was spooky, and I didn't stay for long...  Between Ano and PP you should cart your stuff down to Franklin and try out there - I saw a heee-uuuugge ling while ab diving there.  I have cool memories of Franklin ab dives.  Another interesting note:  I had heard that jeeps used to DRIVE all the way to the island on a minus tide!  Now that's a job for a redneck-psycho!

I think the guy's name was Omar Conger or something?  That happened on my birthday in the late 80's or early 90's?...  I read of it AFTER I used to dive there alot!

So I guess were safe until Sept rolls around?  Tragic news none the less, I felt a little creeped out when i was there, the shark stories didn't help much.   jtf..

I'm hoping that the huge ano reserve will prevent another large reserve being created south of HMB because it's all pretty much the same kind of habitat.  I think the most likely place for a large reserve south of the GG is from point san pedro to montara.  There will be a large reserve on the farralons, hopefully it won't go all the way to stinson beach...

although i would not hesitate to go out on a boat on a nice day at ano nuevo my wife's aunt who works as a docent year round at ano nuevo has told us about the sightings there. the one she remembers most was when a shark pulled an elephant seal out to sea right at water's edge one day.

i hiked there at the end of the 2002 pup season and rounded a corner to see a big bloated mammal with teeth marks on one side. it was dead and had been for a while and was so huge it looked like it was gonna blow. The teeth marks were about 2 feet wide and i dont think they were caused by propellers or fighting with other seals. it was an amazing sight, the head on that thing looked so small it was kind of comical.

something about hitting that area in a kayak which can get tippy really makes me feel like i could be fishing somewhere more relaxing and scoring the same fish. garapatta was a nice place and the kelp beds were huge and deep. i would think it would be worth the drive south an hour further to hit that place before heading in at ano nuevo.

ano nuevo is like a chum stick for sharks, there is so much meat for the landlord to pick through there.
