Here is my 2 cents...
I started salmon fishing with braid and red label fluorocarbon leader. Worked well and caught (and lost) fish. Now, I have 200-ish feet 30lb cheap mono (I think it is Berkeley brand, $5-$6 for a big roll) before my main line and the same line for leader. Haven't tested out enough, but I got the 20lb fish last weekend on this setup. I love the mono for 2 things. 1. It is a lot more stretchable than braid. I think everyone knows about it, but until there is a salmon on the line (or lose it), it is hard to appreciate how important that is. At least that was me before. 2. This year I upgraded my downrigger clip to Scotty Power grip. Back when I didn't topshot the mono, I had my braid snapped at the clip when I popping it out checking bait, and the line wasn't even clipped all the way in. Luckily, I didn't lose anything, but lesson learned. With mono now, I bury the line all the way in and not have to worry line break. The other huge benefit with burying line deep is to be able to crank down and load up the rod really well. The hookset is better that way. Sorry that I drifted the topic a little bit, but IMO, cheap mono is just enough.

When I worked at OPS  : Big Game and Izorline  mono
Most requested

Oops I already posted on this thread ..lol
It still cracks me up a little that OPS won’t sell PLine because of some childish drama they have with the company... That’s some seriously good fishing line, and they’re missing out on sales.
