I have pedaled both bicycle style and Hobie.  At first, I was dead set on a Native Slayer Propel because I have an extensive cycling background and thought I would like the bicycle style better. After trying both, I prefer the Hobie style pedal drive.  I am sure there will be dissenters but the Hobie drive is much more efficient.

When watching videos before I tried them, I always noticed that the bicycle drives had a brief pause at the bottom of each stroke.  I thought it was just user error but when I pedaled them for myself, I noticed it too. It is caused by the momentum of each stroke being killed by the resistance of the water on the prop.  It is not like a bicycle after you build momentum.  It feels like you are pedaling in mud.  The Hobie is WAY faster from a dead stop (which is not a big deal) and maintains speed much easier. Overall speed is about the same but I think it takes significantly more effort to maintain in a pedal.  Drive removal for landing/launching is also much easier in a Hobie.
