The fish isn't impressive, but the story is funny  :smt044 so I'm going to share it.

I've been unsuccessfully going after halibut for my last 4 dives  :smt013. Need one for DOTY. Vis was a very hazy 10' but quickly declined to about 5'. So thankful for the shark shield since I was pretty close to where i saw the great white shark last time. I don't care if they work or not, it gives me peace of mind for sure and I was diving solo which you know your mind plays mean tricks on you!  :shark

I was recently told a trick where you can dive down and put your cheek on the sand and look for bumps in the sand horizon and they might be halibut. So after a few drops on my way out to the sand dollar beds, I decided to try the trick. I was in 25' at the edge of the bed, drop down, and as I put my cheek on the sand, I literally laid my head on a halibut! hahah it bolted out (scared the crap out of me) and stopped about 10 feet away, so I lazily swam up to it and put one right in it's head. Easy shot, but man those things are hard to kill... and they bite! I ripped the gills and stabbed her like 10x in where I figured the brain should be and even still it was bouncing around on my hip as I kept diving.

I also swam in a HUGE baitball that circled me for a while which was pretty cool. I was imagining them being tuna... and also swam for a bit with a big sting ray. As it was a last minute decision to dive after work, I didn't have my gopro charged... so the only photo I got is below! Good times. Still need to go after a bigger flatty if I want any good points on DOTY board. Still got a nice bag full of steaks though!  :smt004

Wow that’s awesome, took me like 8 dives before I even saw a butt and it was only like 29 inches  :smt013

How big it go?!? Even if small you should throw that thing up on DOTY so few years from now you can keep track of how many and how big you have shot!

Nothing like sweet success of crusted halibut!

Good idea! I'll go out after more butts soon. I don't want my first butt to be tiny on DOTY! =P My carbon fins from red triangle come in today so I plan on doing some deep drops next week to see if I can't go after something to be proud of!

haha it was hilarious! I'm still laughing that the first halibut I finally find I tried to kiss before i shot! I did NOT see it at all. Makes me wonder how many others I've swam right over.

Hard to compare my one hali to his many this year... but I am to give him a run for his money as my experience progresses =P

Congrats on the first diving Butt.  Consider yourself lucky you didn't put your cheek/nose in front of the Butt  :smt003

That is a funny story. And I know I would have had to clean out my wet suit after your experience.
