It's a stainless steel Winthrop Gaff hook Hickory handle fiberglassed, and no it doesn't float but it would beat the s*** out of anything

Why glass instead of marine spar urethane?  Advantages?  I use hickory and I do have to reapply the marine spar every year. Maybe I should consider glass.

Looks good man, don’t sell your work short.

I usually do marine poly for the finish. This time I dod the mount and rope in stages and layers so just brushed out a final in the glass. I also was a little disappointed with how easily the poly scratches.

I was eyeing one of those winthrop hooks just the other day!
They look great on a finished gaff. I've still got quite a few of the mustads since I got them in bulk, but I think I'll try one of these center mount hooks somewhere down the line.

Ah yes, hickory. One of the woods I have a love/hate relationship with, just like almond and seasoned oak. Harder than stone sometimes. I would even prefer working madrone over hickory, so I understand the difficulty in getting it to a finished state.

very nice piece!
