Hi All,

My name is Max. Always loved fishing, kayaking (whitewater) and the ocean (grew up west Sonoma county), so this seems like the perfect storm (in a good way).

Haven't really fished off a kayak in the ocean before, but after having a blast on a rockfish party boat last spring I started wondering how could I fish like that under my own power. Sure enough a little internetting revealed that you brilliant people had figured it out: kayak fishing. So here I am, ready to learn.

Welcome and have a blast with all these crazies on this site. Since I can no longer fish with them, I miss the heck out of them all

Thanks all. Looking forward to this adventure.  I've read a bunch of the stickied threads, in Safety esp. so assuming I have my safety kit that leaves me thinking about boats :) I'm thinking in the long term a Kraken 13.5 or Thresher but for now getting something that will just work and using the difference on safety and accessories. So the question is, does this sound like a reasonable strategy and if so, what does a minimum craft look like?

There is this https://sacramento.craigslist.org/boa/d/kayaksobo/6583671837.html Tarpon 120 for $400?

But Costco has new boats (w/ paddle) for that price. Anything wrong with a costco boat as a start? Apparently this https://www.pelicansport.com/us_en/strike-120x-angler is being sold under a costco name.

Maybe I should take this to the WTB forum.

Keep reading and go to the big events and you'll be a pro in no time. As for choosing a boat there are few places to try out a bunch of boats better than the events, although the shops have demo days. I'd resist the urge to get a cheap boat right away and spend some time kicking the tires on decent boats, then if you want to save $$, keep an eye on the classifieds or craigslist or the FB marketplace/kayak fishing groups and a great boat you know you want will surface in no time. (this is also a great way to get a boat already rigged and save tons of time and frustration....)
