Ah.. " Bodega Ba System "  was the inspiration for the "Degoba System" got it.

Another local Star Wars reference is the Miwok (sounds like Ewok) tribe that lived along the coast of Marin/Sonoma County..

Exactly how many kayak fishing newbies wouldn't be welcome to learn from the gurus? I've been desperately itching to get into the fun, and even found a buddy interested in the same. Sadly, we are completely clueless. But, we do offer a hearty serving of Fat Tire (sorry, Sierra fans) in exchange for any guidance, or even just good conversation on a morning paddle. Any help would really be much appreciated.

Rootbeer - check. Thanks again for the invitation. I didn't catch where y'all would be launching from. Could you provide idiot-proof directions? I should probably ask what time too.

Idiot-proof I don't know, but it worked for me, so that probably fits.

To the rockwall area launch - take Webster tube from downtown Oakland or Park/23rd exit off 880, turn right from either Park or Webster onto Central, and Central goes a ways, maybe 2 miles (3 from Park), then you will see Encinal HS on your left, with the big jet on a pole in front of it.  About 50 yards past the main school on the left (north) - shortly after the annex building driveway - you will see a somewhat unimproved drive with chain link on either side, and a small sign saying Encinal Boat Ramp and an arrow left.  The ramp and parking is at the end.

from Webster, I think you could turn right on Atlantic, and left on Central.  Probably shorter.

You could also map Encinal High School on mapquest, will get you there.

Bring rods, licenses, live bait tackle, or swimbait w/squid, and nets!  You wouldn't need any electronics or GPS for this.

Hi cafecraig,

I never fish here before.  How strong is the current here?  What size of sinker should we use (2, 4, or 6 oz)? Are we drift fishing or use an anchor?

Thanks,

Sailfish

Sailfish, it's a drift, small tide swing tomorrow so the current should be down, thus water on the clear side.

Weights, 4 oz would be plenty, 2 may be fine if you aren't fishing in a hole.   Depths vary from 17-35 ft, depending if there's a hole or not.

The ball/live bait setup on a 3-way swivel is standard (I will be using it), though lots of guys like to use a slider instead.  I might try a swimbait w/squid also, if i can find some fresh dead squid.  This would work better on a faster drift.  Live bait is best, though.  If you have a container to keep live bait in, that would be a good idea.

I will bring extra 3-way swivels and 4 oz weights.  If you can just bring your own hooks and leader line, you'll be set up.

Duane is a better person to ask than I am, as I am somewhat new to this also.

Thank you cafecraig for the quick reply.  I caught Halibuts before in Alaska but not here in California.  What size/type of hook would you reccomended?  Also should I use the "wired" leader or just monofilament?  I think I'll bring both just in case ...

I should have posted this here instead but oh well...

Is it possible to get a phone num from someone just in case?

How about parking? Is it safe in the area?

BTW: I'm from SJ/campbell area. I've got a pickup and can take another yak. Let me know if anyone wants to carpool.

See you all.

James, 510-919-0632.  I won't be there til 7 or 7.15.  Yeah it's safe, just lock anything loose in your cab.

Sailfish, for leader, mono, and if the water is clear, I like 20-25# fluorocarbon, and a bit longer, maybe 4 ft.

For the hook, dang I haven't bought any in awhile and the couple i have left were loose...  I would use a 3/0 or 4/0, whatevers there between those.  Personally I wouldn't go smaller than 2/0, if that was all I had.

But that's just me.  For more info, scallen wrote an article on the topic in great detail:

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=9

By the way, if you intend to launch before 7, I will come by and pick up the net before then, and get my yak after that.  I can be there at 6 if you want...  I would prefer not to have to chase ya down on the water for it, that's all.

Thanks again!

Hi cafecraig,

I'll be there around 5:30am, but won't get in the water til 6:00am.  I'll wait for you there.  I'm driving a Teal Tacoma with a yellow Malibu Mini-X.

Thanks!
