You can file an amended tax returns, 1040X and 540X, to properly report your deductions and get a refund for the overpayment.

It a hassle, but worth it in the end.

When I went to lunch with Pat (sincoast), he said it was still being planned for this year. Not sure where it's at now.

P.s. we went to lunch at Cult Taco in Monterey... which is something everyone needs to go to. =)
