Ben, I may be up for Saturday, if we can troll uphill towards Stinson, and then back downhill.  If there was a launch as easy as Muir at Rocky Point where blue caught his last weekend, I might prefer that, but if not, Muir could do.  I would like to watch the reports to see if fish are still being caught in the stretch from Stinson to Slide Ranch.  And yeah, if the winds lay down.  Swell looks good so far.

I would probably be using chovies on an FBR.  Did blue say what bait he used last weekend?

Sunday I have to work.  Grrr.

Muir is as easy a launch as you can get on the ocean. Never seen it too big. Its still early, but I wanna get a salmon.

Isn't there a south swell coming in? Mostly Muir is the dream launch but I've been endoed coming in there

Seems like south swell has similar effect on the south end of Stinson

i'm thinking same for saturday- Muir troll up towards rocky. I'll drive in and take a look from the muir overlook first (see if i can see any birds, etc) then decide the direction

I am still in for Saturday also, as long as the winds stay down.

blue, I don't see a mixed swell forecast yet, but yeah you're right, a S component would affect launch conditions, though probably not enough to deter me.   hey did you catch your fish last weekend on bait/FBR, apex, kroc?  do you troll 1 lb on a sinker release?  I would love to know your general technique...

the dang forecast has changed every day this week.  i'll know for sure friday what i'm gonna do.  i think i would not be doing any dropping/pulling of crab pots.  that would probably be the following weekend.

I thought I read it here someplace about the south swell coming in about now  probably got it wrong

Muir is seldom unlaunchable so disregard what I said

2 or 2 1/2 lbs on sinker release gets it down pretty steep and just about anything you drag through there should work right now

sure love to be out there

blue, no you did read it here - it's just for the last week of the month, I believe, not this weekend.

Thanks for the tip - I will bring both 1 lb and 2 lb.  I hear the fish are in 20-40ft, but I'd rather be high than low, so I may just go with 1 lb and slow troll an FBR - those have good movement at slower speeds I think.

If you really think that will be a waste of my time and I should go with 2 lbs minimum, please let me know, as I want to catch fish and you are more or less the authority, to me.

thanks!

I have been out tolling for salmon several times this year and found the 2 lbs stays down better (more vertical) at kayak speeds than 1 or 1.5 lbs.  The 1 and 1.5 are a little easier to drag around but I believe 2 lbs are needed if you want to be close to accurately knowing your trolling depth.  It does not sound like you need to go very deep based on the reports I have heard from that area.  Good luck and post a report when you return.

I don't know if I've been there on bad days or what, but I've found Muir to be comparable to bean hollow or maybe a little worse.  Maybe I'm not launching from the right spot though - I was doing it straight out from the trail.  Surf might be nicer on the margins, but it's like a 1/4 mile hike across a nude beach...

1lb is fine I just like the feel of dragging 2

Is 1lb lead half the price of 2lb?

fish shallow for sure

Cool... blue I dunno, and I don't really want to buy more lead now anyway.  I have 1 1-lb ball and a couple 2's, so I'll bring both.  I like the feel of the 2-lb'er too, and also agree with Etienne - feel it's easier to keep my depth right with the heavier weight.  I have just gotten a lot more worn out dragging the 2+lb ball, and have a hard time paddling straight (which I kinda suck at regardless).  If I can keep the speed down, I suppose I'll go for the lighter weight first.

I don't remember Muir being an easy launch either, but I've only launched there in November a couple times.

The expected swell has come way down in forecasts for Sat - now 2-3 feet, practically flat.  But they've kicked up the wind.  I think the coast there is pretty protected from wind, but I'll still expect to be on/off early and keep watching the forecast.

Ben, any word yet if Saturday works for you also?  Hope you could join me and Steve and others....?

I can't get out there until Sunday.  Maybe if the Saturday report comes back good, there will be someone to join me.

Sat for sure.
PS - You must have seen Muir during a storm 'cause Muir and the Bean are like two diferent oceans. I dont think Ive ever even seen surfers there the waves are so small but the Bean...
That place is BIG and I love it. Coming back in when you can hear and see the back of the breakers, thats what gets my blood pumping. Scary. Muir is teeny 90% of the time.

looks like the wind predictions are pretty crappy for the weekend
I have a recipe or two for that if you want it

cafecraig not many places along there are protected from the wind
Typically it blows down and in  If you're out and the wind starts ripping keep yourself offshore a bit and start heading in a little before the turn

anyway hope noaa's wrong
wish I could be out there
