Same, cute but not...remind me of wild dogs.  Seal finger is a funky disease they carry that makes your joints grow backwards...gonna fish that spot for Haii at some point.

Seals are cute and curious. Sea lions are territorial and threatening. They will both steal your fish though so keep an eye on them.

3rd one reported on the chron's website today. They've closed aquatic park to swimmers for the time being.

Over the years when I've seen stories of seals and sea lions being allowed to "take over" docks and piers because we are unwilling to shoo them away, I have thought it's ridiculous to allow these wild animals to dictate our inaction!  We are teaching these creatures not to fear us.  I do not advocate killing or maiming them, but they need to know that I will kick them in the face if they don't get out of my way.

Shit like this will be on the rise until we adopt a policy of getting really mean and territorial with these wild animals that wish to compete for the space that we have claimed.

At the end of the interview - the guy with the bit arm says, "we need to make way for these animals."  I instantly thought, "does that mean you will never swim there and that you advocate the stopping of all swimming there and elsewhere in ocean waters?!"  Because that's what it would take - you can't just avoid their space if you're in it.

On my last trip to marina del Rey, the guest slips where over run with seal lions. I couldn't dock. Called the harbor master and was told I could use my wash down pump to scare them off. Didn't work. A series of horn blasts scared some off. Finally used my main to create a good spray that cleared them off. Helped wash the dock off too! It was rather satisfying after losing many fish to them.

Pepper spray should be legal to use if you feel threatened. The mail carriers are allowed to use it on dogs and peace officers able to use it on humans if they feel threatened. :smt001

It's been more and more a common occurrence in Monterey Bay (especially Elkhorn Slough in Moss Landing) where the seals and otters are so used to humans that they will literally try to crawl onto your kayak.  They have a rule in the slough where you need to keep fifty feet between you and the seals or otters.  Apparently the not-so-wildlife either can't read, or they feel the rule doesn't apply to them.  And believe me, it's more scary than cute to have one of them sunning themselves on the bow of your yak.  So be careful out there, my friends, and happy fishing!!!
