Launched with Jason, Dave, and Dan around 6 am. The wind was already howling but we decided to launch and hope the wind would die down. We made it out to the poop chute and saw Al and his dad in there fold-up boat. We all made some bait, mostly jack smelt with a few perch and small chovies thrown in.

Jason and I started drifting in about 20 feet of water. The tide was coming in, pushing us south while the wind was blowing us east. We drifted for around an hour and the only excitement was my jack smelt getting nervous a few times.

Jason and I decided to move back towards the launch a bit. I was dragging my jack smelt behind me when my rod went bendo, fish ON! It starts peeling drag and making a few strong runs. I get it near the boat and it makes a long run when it sees the boat. I get it back and guide it into my net. It is a nice 6lb striper, my biggest striper yet!

Jason and I started to paddle back towards the launch and we saw a striper bust right in front of us, chasing a anchovy. We drifted a bit more then decided to call it a day. The paddle back was a long slog as the wind had picked up to 15-20. I took us about 45 minutes to get in.

Thanks for checking on us Al! Dave has some pics I think.

I wanted to thank Bill and Dave again for helping me out yesterday.  By far and away that was my longest paddle and it helped seeing experienced Kayak fisherman so I can learn the ropes better.  I can like the paddle back to a kayak treadmill workout.  I checked the wind report for Oyster point when I got home and it said there were gust up to 37 miles per hour :smt009

Bill I have already rigged my sabiki with a kastmaster and my fish finder battery is charged. I should have no excuses making bait next time.  Out of the bait you gave me yesterday two perch are still going strong.  The smelt knocked himself silly until he went belly up.

Al It was good seeing you yesterday after meeting you Friday at the pier.  The foldable boat was impresive.

Look forward to next time.

Wow I look like a drunk crazy person in that picture! Maybe it is time to get a hat that fits  :smt005

Gust to 37! That has to easily be the highest wind I have been out in yet. Hopefully it calms down a bit for next weekends derby.

Bill, according to Joel, you paddle like a drunk, crazy person :chug

Keep the hat -- it's bringing you fish.

Hi, guys.  It was impressive to see you guys paddled so far out, especially Dave.  Later, when I saw that the wind was blowing hard and the current was moving quite fast and you guys were still about couple miles from the launch, I started to get little worry.  I'm glad you all made back in safely.

Bill, very nice striper!  Congrat.

We caught couple sand sharks and that was it.  I wish one day I can fish with you guys with my kayak, but with my paddling skill, I doubt I can ever catch up with you.

Al

I did not see anyone land anything. I think there was a halibut derby Saturday and most boats where on the east side of the bay. I did see one party boat working the area but no nets flying.

If the wind keeps blowing it might be fun to launch at OP and drift all the way to Alameda  :smt003 j/k

By the way, when John and I were headed back from Mendo, we drove by Ocean Beach in SF. We saw a shore fisherman walking back to his car with 3 stripers (4 to 5 pounds) - a pretty good haul despite the strong wind and surf conditions.

3 stripers. Isn't the limit 2?  I think so!  those people piss me off.  Anyway I can't believe they are catching fish from shore in this weather.  I looked at Linda Mar this morning and it has calmed down a bit.  Still white caps though.  I may try mori point tuesday if the water is settles some more.

Jason - wish I could join you at Mori tomorrow - but I promised two of my co-workers to a "guided"  bluegill fishing trip at Waterdog Pond in Belmont - after work. Let us know how you do - I'll be free on Thursday / after work for some surf fishing.
