I use a pickup with a lumber rack but id rather rock it with a camper shell. I like using the truck because Its quick to load/unload, I can throw all my gear in the bed and not worry about getting an interior dirty, and there is no odor afterwards. Also a lot more room for stuff in the bed of a truck than in a car or van.
I vote for a pickup with camper shell, too. It keeps the smelly gear away from inside the passenger area.
Only downside is the gas mileage. LSBH is right about plus the other uses of the pickup.  :smt003

WAIT A MINUTE ...    :smt044       My new ride is a 2017 Colorado.  4x4.  4 cyl Diesel ..  Just put a camper shell on it, with Yakima bars.       This baby cruises along at 70 mph  getting 30 - 32 mpg !!!       28 around town...             Killer mileage..  a bit over 600 mile range on a tank of fuel.
      Lovin It !  :smt006

What he said.  My diesel 4x4 GMC Canyon just hauled my 24 ft 5000lb travel trailer with an AI strapped to the camper shell up to Albion and still got almost 17 mpg!

Astro van with Windows. on my second one since the year 2000. it's big enough to sleep in doesn't have to be registered commercially like a truck. doesn't have the Leaky camper shell syndrome and yet it's still rear wheel drive like a truck. slap $450 set of aluminum Weatherguard racks on top and it will carry 6 24-foot Werner type 1A Industrial ladders on top. plenty of room to carry all your tools if you're in the trades as I am. Peppy 4.3 v six have some get up and go to it. gas mileage could be better :smt001

Small single cab truck if you're just kayak fishing and it's only you or a buddy.

Otherwise, double cab 4x4 for more people, snow, mud, etc.

Camper shells are great, side "windoors" are amazing.
