I saw this 9'7" Hobie on craigslist. Is it too small for the ocean?

My first kayak was a 9 footer, got lots of abs and some fish with it.  With a yak that size the best answer would be "it depends".

The GF now paddles my old yak. Van Damme is probably as protected as it gets, but were a few hundred yards offshore here.

Hey Michael,
The price on that 2014 9'7" Hobie seems way too high  high. I bought my 2016 Revo 13 brand new for $1900.

Depends on a lot of factors. What do you want to do?  How big are you?  How comfortable are you on the ocean?  I'm 6' 2" 220lbs and I take my 10' tarpon out all the time.  I've had it a few miles offshore., but I can't tell you it can be exhausting trying to paddle a small boat that far. It drafts deep with my weight,  and doesn't track.  The up side is I can launch it any where.  Short trips to drop a crab pot or two, a little close in rock fishing, or free diving is ideal.

We used to take our sportsman on the ocean a lot when I lived there. Conditions have to be FAC or a little above.

This one is perfect for the ocean

It looks perfect. Unfortunately, I can't afford that much.

Da Bruddah's right - too much for that Sport, but they're good boats.  I have a friend who does the ocean all the time in his Hobie Sport.

Like Dale and some others here, I also started out on 9 foot boats to go offshore.  It's not ideal, but they can do it.

Summary:  that boat's overpriced - get a better boat for your budget.

Good luck.  :smt001

So I might be referenced in that post above.   :smt005   I have a Hobie sport (actually I have 2) and I take it in the ocean frequently.

It was the perfect boat for me when I got it and it still fills most of the missions I undertake, (ocean, bays, lagoons, rivers) but I do have "larger kayak envy."  My complaint is deck space.  I have to plan my trips carefully.

Your weight and what you will haul means everything.  I weigh 175 and the boat works fine for me.  I tend to bob around like a cork in in rolly seas and have not had any problem so far, but I know my limits and I tend to err on the side of caution all the time.   At GS11 I did not go outside of the protection of the point.  When the seas settled down by Monday I went out.

I did over-gross the boat once -- when I had a clip full of fish with a HUGE ling (40").  I could not get all the clipped fish up on the stern to go in.  There's another good reason to have a buddy on the water (with a bigger kayak) He helped me haul my fish back into the launch!   :smt044.

I like how easy it is to "get it up"  :smt002. on top of my Prius.  I tried putting an outback on top of my Prius the other day and decided that when I upgrade, and I will, I will need an easier hauling solution.  You want to be sure that whatever you get is easy to haul and put in the water for you.

To be honest, I love my little Hobie sport and it has served me well.  But I do have kayak envy.   :smt003

Here's my Jackson big tuna I am 6 foot 280 this boat is awesome for me I like the stability, and the 7" lowrance works just fine.however I have never taken it into the ocean but I have fished lakes and delta with it and it's a very stable boat for a bigger guy like me.
