Looks like Linda Mar is shaping up nicely.  Will make up my mind soon, but here is the forecast as of 7/6/17 5:40pm.  Patchy fog = salmon at 20ft down, hopefully.

Saturday
W wind 7 to 10 kt. A chance of drizzle before 8am.  Patchy fog before 11am.  Mixed swell...WNW 1 ft and SSW 2 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

Allright, this is a Go!  Just a change of launch point, from Linda Mar to Rockaway beach (shorter surf zone).  Plan is go out 1 mile out Westward, then 2 miles Northward.  If the bite is hot at Pedro Point, I will go 2 miles Southward.  The rest is TBD.

Saturday
SW wind 6 to 9 kt. Mostly sunny. Mixed swell...NW 2 to 3 ft at  9 seconds and SSW 2 ft at 14 seconds. Wind waves 1 to 2 ft.

Anybody coming?  Ch 69.

Like Chet said, the launch is at the far south end of the beach right next to the rocks. There is a low tide tomorrow morning, which makes it more likely there will be breakers closing out across the cove. The good news is that the tides for the rest of the day are high so your landing should be easier than your launch.

Rockaway can be an amazingly easy launch. The waves can be less than a foot high even when the swell is 4 feet or more.

Rockaway has an escalator rip right at the south end of the cove.  We used to paddle out hair dry. The rest of the cove ic pretty messy though, including killer shorbreak.  I'd probly launch at the far north end of Linda mar instead..... But thats just me.

You should always give both beaches a good look. They are so close together that I it only takes a seconds to drive.  8 out of 10 days rockaway is easier, but those other two days can be bad.

Man, I wished I had seen the south side launch suggestion.  I attempted to go straight out at the worst part!  Salmon bite was off, go figure, just on the day I was out!  Skunks for most of the fleet, the party boats left about 10am and those who stayed didn't get much.  Trolled from Rockaway to halfway between Mussel and Mori Point, back and forth.  Big bait balls around Pacifica Pier.  Not much birds and whale, only saw one whale all day.

Bchen, how did you do?

You gotta go toward the south end of the beach, closer to the rocks.  If you do that, launch & landing are easy peasy.  If you go elsewhere, you won't make it.  Take my words for it.  Lots of fishermen in the morning and beach goers during the day, so be prepared to be a Hollywood star.

By the way, the beach is quite steep.  So if you are planning to get out during landing, make sure you are very very close to the beach.  I jumped out probably about 8-12 yards from the end of the surf, went in a little over chest deep, which makes it harder to control the yak.  If I had to do it again, I would ride it out all the way to a foot/ankle deep.

The surf run is shorter than Linda Mar.  Wheel your yak to the south end, it's not nearby (think HMB at lowest tide and more).  My guess is garyjwebb is right, good 8 out of 10, but for the 2, you don't want to attempt it.

I wish I could say I came back with a salmon, but my trip was a lot like yours.  Peddled almost to Mussel and back to Rockaway twice, couple of small twists and turns in between, and nothing.  Lots of those little fat birds with bait in their mouths, but I didn't see anything on my fishfinder.  That was the same for all five kayakers I went out with (AlamedaMike, and four good fishermen who surprisingly aren't on NCKA: Dave, Ray, Miles, Mike#2).

Getting out was easy, but coming back, even on the south side of Rockaway, was sketchy.  I launch out of Pillar Point 90% of the time and only barely realize how spoiled I am by the ankle lappers there.

I'm going to keep an eye on these threads and try to make it out again soon.
