Dang..........I'll look up "broaching"....welcome home...

Broaching or Broching (bro- chin) verb -

The action of launching or landing a kayak or other small marine craft in locations, conditions or  manner differing from what one would typically launch or land into. This slightly irrationally behavior is brought about by lack of sleep and being in the company of your "Bros" and often involves a camera, a perceived fishing opportunity and/or being observed by members of the opposite sex.

Example:

Jon was lured into broching Linda Mar's gnarly surf by visions of thirty pound Salmon.

haha I like the definition  :smt006 after a day to recover, I'm glad I went. It was more of a surfing outing than a fishing lol learn quite a bit. We will get the chrome this year Tsuri!! then we shall do what bigjim does and drink a beer through the mouth of the salmon lol

Oh god. I'm going to do that beer through the salmon for sure.
Licking my wounds today but will be back out. The siren lures of 30 lb salmon is sometimes too much to resist. :smt001

Okay, I've paddled 4' surf like that in a trad kayak, but not on the Hobie yet. I've punched the Hobie out through a single line of 3' surf at BH. So here's my question:  When is the right time to drop in the drive for that extra power?  My instinct would be to drop it as soon as the water is waist deep and definitely use that paddle, and no rudder for obvious reasons.

Of course, the drive isn't needed for the return trip thru the surf.

whose IDEA was it to go to Linda Mar this morning!! first time there and holly crap...the condition this morning was CRAZY!! I had my doubt when I saw the waves and wind as I'm approaching the site. With Tsuri and Keith assuring that its doable...I unloaded and geared up.

PS. make sure you are fully dressed ie wetsuit or drysuit or wetsuit (farmer john) plus dry pants and top (that was what I was wearing).

Both made it out fine. I was running late so I was the last one to launch. Watch the sets a few minutes. Ummm yeah its very terror-stricking horror of a scene!! lol its shit in your pants type of waves after waves!! unrentless!! I was about to radio them and say screw this crap...no salmon is worth it lol however the thought of chrome overtook me and clouded my judgement...DAMN IT LOST ANCHOVY!! I stood there and overcome the fear and just remember what I learn from last year!!

After a huge set went through, I slowly walk out and quickly got on when it was on a null. Then started paddle like a hell!! non-stop paddling. Waves after waves were forming and I was getting air each time I went through. You have to remember...KEEP PADDLING...GOTTA KEEP PADDLING...you don't want to stop paddling and watch the Godzilla of a wave start forming and crashing upon you. If you do then its GAME OVER!! Build momentum and you will go through or up over the wave. Just don't panic!! Anyways each wave was increasing getting bigger and bigger...and I just paddle and paddle as hard as I can. After like a lifetime, I made it out but kept paddling just in case I was still in the danger zone!!

Once out, I had to recover my energy!! me = out of shape lol We started trolling and with the current and high wind made it very sketchy!! Even if you were to get a salmon, it would be a challenge to land it. We kept going round round and round. Saw a lot of suspect mark!! I had a bite...something took a chunk out of the middle of my anchovy!! not sure how it missed both hooks :( not sure what it was. By the way, remember dressed for the occassion. If I didn't wear a dry top, I would be miserable since the wind made it really chilly!! It would not be fun out there trolling while freezing your ass off lol unless you get a salmon that is lol

With the wind and current, we could have made it to the fishing ground in a hurry but opt to stay close since it would be hours and hours to paddle against the wind and current to get back!! After 3.5 hrs of work, we called it!!

Now the 2nd part of hell. Landing. By this time the wave seem to be bigger than when we went out. Also a lot of surfer to watch out for!! I timed the set and was going in smooth however it quickly changed in an instant!! A mother of all wave started to form and before you know it it was on top of me and started to crash down. I tried to point it straight but no dice so I remember to broach!! Leaning into the wave as hard as I can. It was miracle that somehow I did it right and I rode it in. ALL CAUGHT ON MY GOPRO!! Its a sick video! I landed without incident. I'll post the video after I get some rest!! I'm tired...drove over 800 miles in the last 3 days :(

Bust out the drone as well so I'll post both later lol. Just a little advise on landing...STOW everything and tied down everything!!! Also bring as little stuff as possible!! lol

to recap:

crazy launch, crazy landing, no salmon love...gain a lot of experience lol

CRAZY OUT!!
Crazy, thanks for the great TR!  I can sense your adrenaline must still be pumped!

Was talking to a guy in the parking lot who lives in Pacifica, said on a good day he can swim his yak out north of the pier.....seemed like a non suicidal type.

here is the drone footage.

after looking at the footage, the wind was calm inside the cove but the outside...oh man.

I see some video of people popping in the drive as soon as they can. I would imagine it be good since you can punch through the wave. It would be bad if you crash though since it could potentially damage the drive on the crash :(

Keith and I talked about using the drive going in on the landing but the same thing would happen. Unless you are quick and pop out of the drive before landing or lock it on the flat side. Risk is too much for the reward I guess.

Ha ha - nice job, crazy!  I'll bet you scared the poo out of a few surfers on your way in.  That's okay.  Plenty of those kooky surfers have scared me when they bail their board at the slightest sign of whitewater.  I have practically given up on surfing LM.  Next time, paddle hard & get out in front.  Surf that wave in!

For future reference, keep an eye on the satellite photos and watch for the clearing of the marine layer around Pacifica.  That big donut of fog you see outside is a sign of a nearshore wind eddy.  The south winds can howl through Pacifica in those conditions.  I watch for those days for kitesurfing at Sharp Park.  20mph winds are pretty typical.  That south wind is also side-off at LM, so the waves get steeper & hollower.  Good for surfing, not so good for getting a kayak in or out.

Crazy, I am getting a SME error due to copyright message on the drone footage ... I had to go to your youtube page, then click on it separately.

thanks for the tip. Well I tried to watch out for the surfer as best as I can but there are so many. I can't help that I had to ride the wave in :( Not my intention but I can only imagine what a 200 pound object going at that speed...would not be good  :smt044

After seeing the video, I did notice one guy pop up after I went by him yikes!! I'm sure they seen me coming or should know that I'm there at least and to get out of the way.
