What is the legal size limit?  I can't seem to find it!

No size limit, might be bag a limit of 10 considering it's a rockfish?

There is no size limit. That being said, keeping the small ones won't give you much (read: any) meat.

I suppose a self imposed limit of one foot is fine?  I would hate to kill a small one for two bites of meat.  What would you guys recommend?

I've caught and eaten 100s of them over the years. Never even hooked one under a foot! Maybe 16" would be the minimum. That would yield around 6 oz in fillets.

Don't think they fall into the RCG Complex limit of 10 in possession, but assume they fall into the general limit of no more than 10 (?) a day of a single species.

Best pokepoling day I ever had for MFE was three, so doubt I'll be worrying about a limit anytime soon.

+1 on all of the above.

Here are the Monkeys that have been entered in DOTY since 2012 to give you an idea of size range...

I once found a juvenile monkeyface prickleback in the mouth of a lingcod, still alive. I put the 8" eel on my 4 oz jig and proceeded to catch loads of bottom fish on one bait. It was the perfect size, I then caught another big ling on that bait and it regurgitated an octopus and several freshly eaten herring, it was on after that! Thats my only experience with these crazy looking fish/eels, Id love to catch more of them and try that ceviche recipe

Damn!  Must have been a heck of a lot of thrashing around at that's ling's dinner.  I wonder how long that eel lived in the ling's belly?  They seem to live forever in my bucket!

If you freeze em and then thaw em out sometimes they come back to life!

Due to the freaky looking face, slime, smell when you clean em and mushy flesh there not so popular around my house anymore...

They firm nicely if you soak them in salt, lime juice with a little cilantro and maybe some onion.

They also make a passable anago tempura.

Good to know might make some good civiche?

Definitely more anago like than unagiish.

Bleeding, cleaning (before you go home) and putting on ice is also a good tip.
