I am carpooling with Dave. We don't have any firm plans yet but I am pretty sure we are heading done either Friday or Saturday, fishing La Jolla until the trip starts.

Do you think my Avet SX and Trevala Rod will be enough to handle the YT/WSB?

I took one  of the boats for a 5 day Mexico trip from Fishermans Landing in SD last Dec to catch YT and I  took a Trinidad/Trevala combo with me. I have to say that I won't make that mistake again. The Trevala rod while is rated for high line test, really is not made for fighting with fast moving fish like YT's. My Trevala was bent like a 'U' for the 2 times I used it and I made the good choice of not using that  rod again. The rod while slim does not have a very sturdy backbone and will bend  down pretty far as compared to rods rated  for that same line test. No kidding that they said that its made for jigging only.
I used a Pro Gear/Calstar for the rest of the trip and did very well. I'd recommend that if you're going to take a Trevala with you, take a different rod as a backup. I bet you just might need it.

For YT, I use a Calstar Grafighter 700H if fishing the dropper loop or yoyoing jigs with 40-50# test with a 2 speed Avet. If your fishing close to the bottom you need to stop them from making a run to the bottom and getting "rocked". If you are flylining, lighter stuff is OK since you can play around with them more. Have a great time.

So here is what I would bring,
for yellows a rod for yo-yoing or throwing iron and a live bait rod for trolling. 50lb spectra with a short top shot of 30lb flouro. The kelp out there is tough and so are the fish.

One of the biggest draws to the island is the calico fishing, either in the kelp or in the boiler rocks. A calcutta 400 loaded with 20lb mono will work for most of these fish. While fishing the plastics is a great way to cover a lot of water, tossing a live sardine into the boilers or onto the kelp mats or the holes can produce the biggest fish not to mention the WSB.

I think one of the heavier rated Trevallas would be a great yellow rod in a kayak. I do tend to like rods that are faster taper though.
Don't worry about the WSB they may get big but are not nearly as tough as the yellows, I get most of mine while fishing calicos on 20lb.
Remember you are in a kayak, you don't need real heavy gear, if the biggest you have is 20lb, that will land 99% of the fish you hook. Don't give the fish line, let the kayak be the drag.

Well there you have it from Jim. I have only fished YT from boats, not yaks. I agree with the fast tip especially for jigs.

Thanks for the tips Jim! I hope I am lucky enough to hook a YT and test out my gear.

The trip is going to be cheap, but I'm likely going to spend about $700.00 on gear. Don't let my wife read this! Thank God for the taxman!

I am looking at putting together two bigger game setups together for the trip.I have one older penn 113 4/0 that I am going to have rebuilt, ( calling Alan Tani ?  )  but I would like to have another combo such as a two speed. I don't want to go crazy on the setup pricewise but want something that isn't going to let me down.

I am ordering a calstar blank to wrap for the trip and have a cheaper shakesphere tidewater BTW60 to use.

I have been looking at the charkbait website to get a rough idea of prices.

FYI. I ran into Dr. Gary (one of the early LJ yakfishers) at the LJ launch last month. He had switched ALL of his rigs to Trevallas and Trinidads. All he had was four Trevalla rigs and he catches a lot of yellows and WSB at the shores.

I honestly think the 4/0 is bigger than you need, and really unless going for BIG TUNA you won't need a 2 speed.
A trinidad 12-14 and 16 is all the reels you need. We have caught Marlin on the 12

Brian,I don't think you will be able to take advantage of a two speed reel on a kayak.
I have several that have been used for tuna,yellowtail,grouper, etc. but there was a boat under me.The drag settings are usually scaled at 15-45#'s(50-150lb.test)that's too much for a yak.Use a scale and set 10-13#'s of drag on a reel and get in you boat and tie it to something!It doesn't seem like much,but it will really move a kayak.More that that and you could be swimming.
