"Unfinished Business Tour" - trip planning

When is everyone heading down and how long are people going to stay for the trip? I need to get the time set aside at work.

Places to stay before and after?

Anyone driving?

Do we need to bring ours own yaks down?

Fishing Gear? PAL will probably chime in on this one.

Brain... don't you have a trailer?  Perhaps, a few of us here can caravan down with you.

I am carpooling with Dave. We don't have any firm plans yet but I am pretty sure we are heading done either Friday or Saturday, fishing La Jolla until the trip starts.

Thanks for starting the thread Brian.  Someone dropped and my number came up so now I'm on the trip and was thinking the same thing as I was writing out my check.

I'd kind of like to head down early Saturday and fish for a bit and maybe hang out in the gaslamp saturday night for a brew or two.  Not sure yet if I'll come back on Tuesday or Wednesday... I don't have to be back at work until Thursday so I guess I'll play it by ear.

Not positive yet if Liz will be heading down with me but if not I've got room in the truck for someone who wants to carpool down.  Just send me a PM and we'll figure things out.

Looks like I'll have to leave the Abu 6500C3 home but I do have a couple of rods that shouldn't have any problem handling a YT, I hope. 

I have a Penn 965, think that would be a good reel to take?  I'm thinking of buying the Daiwa Saltist.  Would that be a bad choice?

I took one  of the boats for a 5 day Mexico trip from Fishermans Landing in SD last Dec to catch YT and I  took a Trinidad/Trevala combo with me. I have to say that I won't make that mistake again. The Trevala rod while is rated for high line test, really is not made for fighting with fast moving fish like YT's. My Trevala was bent like a 'U' for the 2 times I used it and I made the good choice of not using that  rod again. The rod while slim does not have a very sturdy backbone and will bend  down pretty far as compared to rods rated  for that same line test. No kidding that they said that its made for jigging only.
I used a Pro Gear/Calstar for the rest of the trip and did very well. I'd recommend that if you're going to take a Trevala with you, take a different rod as a backup. I bet you just might need it.

Yea i have a trailer that will hold 4 yaks plus 3 top of my truck rack. My truck seats one passenger and a midget in the backseat. I'd prefer not to bring the trailer because it will add a lot to the driving time and makes parking a pain in crowded areas. I won't rule it out if we need to. I'll be driving down I-5.

I don't have a plan on when I am leaving or coming back yet. Open car pool seat.

When I went do to SD a little while back I had talked to Steve about fishing for YT together but he was traveling up north to Fresno on the weekend I was down there.

Where are you guys staying?

Hey Angel. The 965 will work though you will need at least 30lb test. Also be sure to take an extra line spool with you. After fighting with 2 large fish, my line became all twisted and required fresh new line to be spooled on. These fish are much different than what we're used to around here.
I wish I could go but later on in Sept I'm taking another trip out of SD for 5 days again.

Ark - I've never fished for yt before but my thought is that we will be fishing from our kayaks and not on the boat itself. Which means (I'm assuming) we can get away with lighter gear. (someone correct me if I'm wrong) Chuck did land a nice tuna in Mexico last year - in a kayak - using his trevala rod. Seems to me that a kayak is the perfect platform for guys who like to fight big fish with light gear (light line) and I'm totally all for that. Maybe we need to get some input from the local kayak guys....

FYI... Ken's Custom Reels in Oceanside CA (760-967-REEL) still has a good price on Progear Classic 501 reels.  They have increased in price just a bit since the Fred Hall show, but they are now going for $140 plus tax and shipping... not bad considering they are $200 everywhere else.  I think they have gold colored ones left.

I just bought one and I likey... spooled it with 50# Sufix braid... holds over 300 yds of that stuff, or they hold 400 yards of 40# powerpro.

Nice reel... star drag...  6.1:1 gear ratio... penn carbon fiber drag... weight is 18 oz.  I can't wait to hear it go zzzzzzing!

I'm going to put it on a Calstar 700M/L that I'm building.

Eric sounds dialed in. Float a note on Dennis SPike's SoCal Forum. Those guys are super helpful and a lot of them are YT kayak veterans. I am sure they can lay it out for you.

Yes, you need to bring your own boat...and everything else for that matter.  Mooch is right...lighter stuff is ok on a yak as you can only pull so hard before the boat simply moves, but a Trevala is on the light side.

I am heading down on Friday with Leah.  Gonna fish sat. or sun at LJ.

You would do better with a post on Jims board or BWE...Spikes board is pretty dead these days, and the format is MADDENING!!!

I still have no idea how I'm going to go about this, but here are my options.

1 - Rent a SUV for Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and possibly Thursday (if I don't make it back in time on Wed.) because I don't want to subject my 4Runner to that kind of punishment. (My GF can use the car while I'm on the boat). Pay for hotel for Saturday and Tuesday. (GF staying at her friend's house while I'm on boat).

2 - Try to find somebody to pay to haul my yak and some gear down and my GF and I will fly down on Sunday. Then I'd have to rent a car in SD for Sunday - Tuesday.

Guess I better figure it out soon!
