Tried my luck at a new 831 beach yesterday afternoon for Stripers.

The BushMaster joined me for awhile...he was casting and I was swimming.

He got no bites and I saw no fish.  :smt009

You pick the beach next time dude!!  :smt002 :smt008

I dove until past sunset and then hiked back over the dunes in the dark...was hoping the "magic hour" of twilight might change my luck but no dice.

Part of me wants to say F it and just go back to reef hunting...lot easier to find a Lingcod or rockfish than one of these striped bastards this year.

But, I do enjoy being in the dynamic surf zone, and I KNOW it will feel great once I blast one...so will keep at it as often as I can at least through July....

Lucky dive #10 is gonna be the ticket!!

I've read reports that the striper bite in the Bay/Delta is still awesome, and lasting longer than usual.  Maybe they're running a little late entering the ocean?  The 2016-17 precip and weather patterns were markedly different compared to the previous several years of drought, so the migration timings of various species this year could be expected to be delayed compared to the drought year.  Same thing's happening up here too with the spring Chinook runs up the rivers, with the fish showing up much later than usual.

That makes sense....I started looking earlier this year than last year, hoping that all the rain etc might have "flushed" them out earlier...but maybe the opposite is true.

By this time last year I had seen at least 100 schoolies and taken 5...and my two big ones came in first week of July...

So there's this little voice in my head saying "you're missing your chance!!!"  :smt013 :smt010 :smt044

Think I just need to be patient and not give up and get out there when the conditions are decent and not force it and dive in crap conditions...cuz it's pretty hard to shoot a fish when you can't see anything.

Confucius says:  you cannot achieve identical results at a different time and location unless your aim is to fail at discovering new places, furthering relationships and experiencing your own breath and heartbeat as part of a unique moment in your life.

From my understanding, when you have high spring flows in the Central Valley rivers and long periods of snowmelt, it keeps the water temperature cold.  Stripers will initiate spawning once the water warms up to a certain point (low 60s I think).  So even though they may migrate up the river in March/April, they'll have to hang around up there until the water temps hit that magic number to initiate spawning.

If there's an abundance of food in the Delta, the stripers would have less incentive to head to the ocean following the spawn.  That could be another factor.

Might be worth looking back at 2011 reports and see when a bulk of fish showed up on the beaches.  The 2010-11 winter was comparable to this year's winter.

I love how much you know about fish dude...no surprise that you are such a great all around angler.  :smt004

Thanks for the info and insight!!

Ocean stripers are all jacked up this year,I haven't caught a single one in my regular spots, where this time last year I limited out every time I went out
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it
