Finally was able to get in contact with his brother for some details. They've pretty much given up hope that he'll be found. They'll do an under water search tomorrow. They believe nothing was found due to the fact that he usually tied everything down to his SIK kayak. His brother said he doesn't own a wet or dry suit. Also, he's pretty new to kayaking. He does have a PFD but don't know if it's being worn. He went solo to meet his buddies with a pb at Emeral Bay. His buddies also wasn't able to get into Emeral Bay due to engine trouble. The whole family was up there searching for him for the last few days. They're hoping for a miracle.

I was on the horn with the parks service today since we're rolling up to EB soon ourselves. It sounds indeed as though there was some really rough water. Guys it goes without saying that a wetsuit / PFD / radio are absolute necessities especially since that water is much colder than the ocean. Be safe out there!

Not sure about fishing but he headed out from bliss state park and was making a short paddle to a campsite in emerald bay and never made it. I don't know the area but from google maps it looks to be just around the bend. I find it kinda odd they haven't found any of his belongings.

I've paddled from Bliss to Emerald Bay and back on a sunny summer day.  The wind came up and I was in 2-3' waves.

It's not a short paddle at all, and the deepest part of the lake is right there.

I've noticed and maybe others have too , that there seems to be a train of thought that lakes are not as dangerous as the salt .Ive talked  with people kayaking at Lake Sonoma  and asked about not wearing a PFD and often get " it's a lake "....  just my .02

One of the worst paddles I've ever had was coming back against the wind on Lake Mendo.

Those even sound like famous last words.

As I was reading all the posts on this thread , I'm wondering as someone mentioned that he tied down everything to his SIK that he may have tethered himself too ..got swamped and taken down too

I feel bad for the family

Lakes are just big swimming pools. Would you wear a pfd in a swimming pool? Just because it's farther than you can swim to shore? Just because maybe when you get to shore there is a high bank or cliff and no way to exit? Just because the water is cold and hypothermia will set in before you reach safety? Worry wort!

Yes! And it's really hot, cold water isn't a problem.

I just returned from family camping at DL Bliss where they home based the search effort.  Very impressive - lots of people and tons of equipment and boats out looking for this guy.  For 3 days I watched many many people taking part in the search (Placer County, Coast Guard, Air Force, search and rescue volunteers, El Dorado Co).  Yesterday an Air Force team from Monterrey sent out 2 groups of 5 divers each, plus 2 deep water divers, searching down to 100'.  They mentioned the challenge of conducting such a search between DL Bliss and EB because of the steep granite shelf and deep waters at that part of the lake.  The report they shared was they know he did not make his destination, he left during high winds, no boat/possessions found, no witnesses, his car was found at the launch point.

I can relate to the cold water there, I was rescued by PB there myself. I was wearing a PFD but not dressed for emersion. ( lesson learned ) hypothermia is no joke and it doesn't take long to set in you loose grip in your hands fairly quick so if didn't get back in your kayak quick your in deep trouble.
