This week’s past flat spell and finals being over gave me the opportunity to dive Monterey and Albion. While diving Monterey with a couple Coastie friends, we found a nice school of blues. I dove down hoping to find a big hungry ling with no luck so instead I settled for a couple of blues Coming across a decent ling, I can see she survived a recent incident and decided to follow her, instead of adding her to my stringer. I am happy I did because she took me to a new species I haven’t seen before, a thornback fish. With no sand around he must have been lost. During one of my dives with my stringer full, I feel an eerie feeling and turn around. Luckily it was just a hungry male seal lion seeming to see if he could take a few fish off my hip. After this we decide to change spots and hopefully lose this guy. Coming across another school I am quickly rushed over the pinnacle by the picking up surge, scaring off the school. Calmly, I just kept my eye on the prize and waited until I could line up the shot. Paddling back in we stop at one last place with the visibility being horrible we call it quits soon after a couple more fish.
That Saturday I was luckily able to dive with two great friends and divers I haven’t dove with for some time. Steve and I met at my house and headed out to meet Thomas and his friend John in Mendocino. We were greeted with completely flat ocean and 25+ foot visibility. With Thomas mentoring John, he quickly landed his first fish! Leisurely taking our time we all ended up with vermilions and a assortment of fish, along with our limit of abalone.

Enjoy the video!
