I've heard the Bass bite has been good at Chabot and am wondering if anyone has plans to check it out. I'll probably be on the lake today (Sun), and maybe Mon and Tues if time allows.
I'm a realtive newbie so any advice / tips would be appreciated.
Company always welcome.

Hey sfbayyak,

I usually fish Lake Del Valle but I'd like to start fishing Chabot soon. Let me know when you plan to fish Chabot again - It's been a while since I've fished that lake.

Are you planning to kayak Chabot?  I know that they don't allow private boats on the water, you have to rent theirs. (unless things have changed recently) I can't imagin they'd not allow kayak.  I don't know for sure.  If someone know for a fact that kayaks are allowd, please let us know.  if you haven't been there, you might want to call and ask.

I live near Lake Chabot and have fished it with my Hobie Outback several times.  The boat launch fee is $2.  No gas motor boats allowed - canoes and kayaks only.  Bring a cart because the parking is at least a hundred yards from the boat launch.  It's a beatiful little lake.  I've caught an 8 and 11# trout there and I know a guy who caught a 14# largemouth.

I live about 15 minutes away from the lake and try to get out on the water at least twice a week. The lake is 315 acres and very beautiful.Lots of deer, a resident cougar and a pair of Osprey that like to hang there. I went out on Sun. and Monday and got a few nibbles on a plastic worm but wasn't able to set the hook. :smt009  I will probably be going out on Monday or Tues. afternoon of next week after I accomplish some things on my "Honey Do" list. I work 4 ten hour days so I'm always open to fish the Lake on Sun-Tues.

Hana Pa'a, I am anxious to try Del Valle for Bass. Any advice for me? :smt006

Dave,

My advice on Del Valle is to troll (casual paddling)a shad rap along the lip of the shoreline. Look for 10 to 15 feet of water. Once you hook up trolling, hang around the area where you hooked up and start fan casting swim baits.

I've had a lot of luck using this system and have caught SM Bass, trout and LM Bass (and a few catfish and big bluegills as well)

Good luck - let me know when you plan to fish  :smt023

Hey Joel, thanks for the advice on Del Valle. Much appreciated.
I'm thinking about trying Chabot again on Monday June 6th in the mid to late afternoon. Tues would also work for me. I'll send you an e-mail with my number.

No problem Dave  :smt002

IMO: Del Valle is a great fresh water fishery....BUT:

$6.00 to park
$2.00 to launch your kayak
$4.00 for a fishing permit
stare at the pretty park ranger   :smt061 (I forgot her name) = PRICELESS  :smt007
-------------------------------
$12.00 total fee  :smt011

AND you have to deal with the power boaters...

The plus side is: Lot's of fish = Small Mouth Bass, Large Mouth Bass, HUGE stripers, catfish, trout and BIG bluegills....and the camp sites are well kept.

Chabot:
$2.00 kayak launch
$4.00 fishing permit
$5.00 parking fee
-------------------------
$11.00 total fee (a buck cheaper than Del Valle)

* You can park on the street for free - if you get there early enough.

That'd be why I've yet to wet a line in FW out here.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
