The new Wilderness Lithium battery I got for my FF has an automatic shutdown feature. I'm thinking if I hook up something that wil draw current when the FF is off I can prevent the battery from turning itself off when I'm not using my FF. The battery will be in the pod on my Thresher. I will need to open the pod and turn on the battery then quickly turn on the FF and then close up the pod. I don't want to have to do that otw if I have to or want to turn off my FF. I'd like to connect something useful that will draw a small amount of current so the battery won't shutdown. I could just put a light or something in the pod with the battery. I could put an anchor light up on my flag that would be on all the time. Does anyone have any ideas of something I can run off the battery that would be useful and not use a lot of juice?

That sounds strange. What possible benefit is there to having a charged battery "shut down" when there is no power being used?

One reason I'm not jumping on board yet. $30.00 brick works. Not broken, why fix it. (not saying I don't want one real bad) Think I'll wait a bit and see how it works for others. Maybe we can get Elon Musk to produce something for Kayaks!?!?!?
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

A suunto LED backlit compass won't draw much. Wire it unswitched so it's always hot, problem should be solved and now you have a sweet deck mounted compass.

Definitely a good idea. If only I hadn't ripped the light out of the brand new compass I mounted right next to the pod a month ago.  :smt044

I think there are potential safety issues that are improved by not having the battery hot all the time. At least I assume that must be the reason, because it seems pretty stupid otherwise. If you're going to keep it out and handy for charging phones etc it's not a problem. Since most kayak FF batteries are stored to stay dry, it's a pita.

I am in need of a new battery. I just wish they had published this feature in the promo material.

So does it immediately turn off the battery if you power down the FF, or does it have some sort of timer, like after 5 mins it shuts off?  Wonder if a simple 12V LED and resister might be enough to keep it running?

The instructions say the battery will automatically turn itself off when power is no longer being pulled or drained. Unplugging devices or turning devices off will start the 30 sec automatic shutoff cycle. LED indicators will turn off after 15 sec and the battery will turn off completely after another 15 sec.

I use a lithium battery now and appreciate the extended power, as well as a significant drop in weight   (approx -75%) from the brick style lead acid battery. Most FF have a standby mode to conserve power, this might solve your problem since it would still be drawing a small amount of power. I like the idea of running an led light or compass to solve your problem. Check this site out https://hobbyking.com/en_us/?gclid=CIzZyaHG6NMCFRBEfgodZ34M3w&gclsrc=aw.ds&___store=en_us

I also need to verify that the FF draw is 0 when turned off. Standby mode is fine. The other day mine was acting up and I did a reset otw. I'm just not sure about having no choice after 30 secs.

voltmeter maybe? If you're keeping the lithium in hull you won't know the voltage without the FF on.

have you actually tested it with the FF to make sure you can't turn the FF back on after 30 seconds? I'd try that first if you haven't.

Well I could make you one of these (essentially) in about 10 minutes:
Wouldn't look like that, i'd use a USB cable, some heat shrink and a 5v LED.  Would mean having a 5v port open though.

You could do the same thing with the 12v LED and resister, will consume very little energy.

The battery will stay at 12-12.3 the entire time it is available for use. It does not drop like the bricks down to 11.?? or something.

It has 5 led's on the side to tell you how much longer you will have 12 volts.
