In a couple weeks AdventureManDan and I depart on a 4 month spearfishing trip. We start in Juneau, Alaska and travel all the way down the coast down to Cabo San Lucas, and back up the gulf. We will be taking plenty of pictures, and releasing some videos of the trip. Looking to break a couple world records, targeting  everything possible. Anyone interested in keeping up with the trip can follow along on Dan or mines page for more frequent updates.

If anyone has any connections, or wants to meet up for a dive as we travel down, shoot me a message.

Looks like you are starting near Homer AK. Juneau is about 5-600 miles south of your AK dot

Good luck

Sorry, hard to swipe a line on a phone with your finger  :smt003

Scrambling for last minute sponsors, several decided to wait to respond until 3 weeks before we leave LOL.

News travels fast via social media....A bit embarrassed by what a mess of drama this became. I wasn't going to post it on here but since it was brought up here's an explanation. Take if for what it's worth, I'm mentally drained with the can of worms this mess opened.

A write up of the “Adventureman Dan” Alaska to Mexico trip and why I had to get out ASAP for anyone who is interested… I will try to keep it down to the facts and take out the personal differences with Dan.

Short version- Dan could not provide me with the information and planning I said I would need when I agreed to the trip. 3 hours into the trip Dan did not know how to properly drive and brake his trailer downhill. He roasted the pads and warped the rotors going into Shelter Cove. An estimated $700 repair which I was not comfortable splitting. The next day we dove for abalone, where he knowingly high-graded and asked me to illegally get abs for him. I decided I could not continue with this situation. Dan drove me back to my house to unload my gear, and left with my $1,000.00 deposit and $368 for the ferry we booked.

Long version- 3 months ago after returning from New Zealand I saw a post advertising for this trip. I contacted Dan, and drove all the way to San Diego to interview with him. He explained it would be 4 months long starting in Alaska, traveling through Canada, Washington, Oregon, California, and then 2 months in Baja.

My main concern was price, which he left at no more than $600/mo in gas, and splitting costs such as tolls along the way. I said I was in, but would need more research and estimates on paper; a proper breakdown of expenses. I sent him $1,000.00 via Paypal and left with the parting words of “Please get me all the information about the trip as soon as you can.” My mistake was sending him money before having a contract and seeing it in writing.

As the weeks and months went by, I requested more information and research, but was met with responses such as “I’m dealing with a lot of truck and trailer prep, we’ll figure it out along the way.” I explained to Dan weeks before leaving I cannot commit to an open ended budget if he had no research done on costs.

A week or two before departure he told me that 1/3 of everything would be split, even his insurance and registration. I told him I cannot afford everything such as mechanical issues, and do not think paying his insurance and registration was fair since it was his vehicle. I reiterated if that was the case I cannot go, but he continued to tell me it’s too late and if something major happens he won’t be mad if I go home. I tried to explain randomly getting out in a foreign country with a kayak and truck of gear might be a problem , but Dan did not seem to acknowledge this wasn’t a plausible situation I could get in.

Fast forward to departure. Around 5 PM June 1, we leave my house. We get to Garberville and start heading to Shelter Cove for the night. When we get to Shelter, we see heavy smoke coming from the brakes. The rotors are glowing red hot. Dan did not know how to properly brake a truck with a trailer on a downgrade, and rode them too hard coming in. We limp to a campsite for the night. The next morning we go for a shore dive at Shelter Cove. After being out for a few minutes Dan approaches me and says he’s getting sick, and pulled a 7” ab prematurely because he didn’t think he could get another. He tells me he is going to put it back and get a bigger one. I explain to him that he can’t as that is illegal high-grading. He tells me he knows it’s illegal, but he didn’t hurt the ab, and then puts it back anyway. He then becomes more sick, and explains he has no shame and would like me to get his 3 abalone limit for him. I tell him I’m sorry but that’s illegal, and I won’t do it. He then gets his 3 abalone (all 7” like the original one he high-graded) and we go in. When we get back I start calling mechanics to get an estimate for Dan. I find out its about $700 for all new rotors and brakes. Dan mentions that won’t be bad split three ways. I tell him I am sorry, but I told you I cannot do that, and I feel his mistake and lake of preparation and experience in his trailer-towing trip should not cost the rest of us. He is not happy, and we discuss me going back home. Dan drives me back to my house, and I unload my gear. I tell him he can stay until Monday for the brake appointment I lined up locally for him.

The next day I get messages from him stating my friends are “threatening him” and saying he stole my money. I explained to him I did not tell anyone he “stole my money” or ask anyone to contact him. In fact I asked friends to not message him, but I really do not feel he had the right to keep my $1,400.00 for this trip falling apart from his constant lack of planning, skill, and coming through on a budget of expenses. Dan sends the exact message of “I also invested over $30,000.00 into this trip so that YOU could be accommodated as best as possible.” Messages from Dan continue to lay guilt that this purchase was for me(us) and the trip and that he had always planned to get a sailboat after this trip and sail the coast and didn’t need a trailer. Understand that Dan explained to me at the start of this that he was taking his time getting it because this would be his home after the trip, and was planning on traveling up the east coast from the Sea of Cortez afterwards. My father also offered up a trailer for the trip, but Dan repeated it again that he needed one to live in after. It ends with Dan says he’s not comfortable staying there, that I agreed to give him the money if I didn’t continue on the trip, and leaving my house.

During our conversation about me getting out of the trip Dan brought up that he was NOT looking for a dive buddy. He was looking for a business partner. I would expect someone looking for a business partner to show a little more professionalism, and business etiquette with contracts, budgets, and planning. I received nothing but a scribbled number on scratch paper right before departure. Nothing that I said I needed to go through with this was provided, and most of the expenses I found out about were from my own research that Dan either didn’t do, or failed to communicate to me.

I hope this answers any and all questions about the trip, and I’m sorry if I let any of you down. You guys helped immensely with money, gear, advice, and general support. You are amazing and I appreciate you more than you know. I gave this trip my best effort despite all the signs leading up to departure that screamed at me to not go. Unfortunately it only took 3 hours before exactly what I told Dan I was worried about actually happened. I plan on coming up with a game plan to get to Alaska my self, and a few other trips including Mexico this summer/fall to hopefully salvage something of this summers plan. I’m looking at a month long rental in Los Barriles in late August/early September. If anyone is interested in flying out and staying, I should have a vehicle there for airport pick ups.
