I was just curious at how some of you can hold your breath for so long.i can barely get a minute while sitting on the sofa and feel slightly light headed the both times.you guys do a lot of cardio, running and such?
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Breath ups.  And practice.  Which I have to admit I haven't done as much as i used to.  :smt011  Others here probably have some great wisdom cause they are still hard in the game.

youtube can be a good place to look up many question if you search a little. sometimes you don't even need to. . that's the first place i go to..

i dunno how accurate he is but it seems logical what he is saying. i do know i can hold my breath longer on an empty stomach versus a full stomach.

Hyperventilating will help you holding your breath longer but do not over do it.  I can hold my breath for 3 and a half minutes with hyperventilating technique vs 2 and a half without hyperventilating.

Plz look up the breath up technique, hyperventilating is not good. It increases the chances of blackouts. YouTube has tons of videos about this. Also take a look at O2/CO2 table apps for your phone. That has helped me a lot on my breath holds.

Yes, there is a possible "shallow water blackout" if over hyperventilating.  I do it but one should learn the proper technique and not pushing the limit.

What is the reason you are diving and how deep do you need to go?
If you want to increase your bottom time and depth; take a class. Seriously.
You will absolutely amazed at the progress that can be made just after a 2 day course.
It may seem a bit pricey, but worth every penny.
Bite the bullet and take a class. The knowledge you gain will be with you on every dive plus you will know exactly how people stay down longer and dive deeper than you.
You don't have to have a long breath hold or dive deep to get abs or shoot fish either, but the ability to do so makes you a safer and more confident diver.
If you are confident in your ability you will be more relaxed. Being relaxed uses up a lot less of your breath hold than if you were chalked full of anxiety.
Using proper techniques streamlines things too.
Take two people who have the exact same bottom time. One uses proper technique and the other doesn't. The one using the proper technique will dive deeper than the one not using proper technique even though their bottom time is exactly the same.

I once sat on the couch and couldn't hold my breath for 30 seconds.  I thought there was no way I could do more.  I was able to work up to a couple minutes with practice.  But like Tote says.  Taking a class sure helps.  Laying motionless in a training pool with a spotter I was able to hold my breath for 4 1/2 minutes. Never tried to go past that and some classes don't let you go that long anyways.  While spearfishing you use up the oxygen a lot quicker so I rarely stay underwater for more than a minute at a time.  Not because I can't but because I want to limited the chance of blackouts and if I had an emergency underwater like getting caught in fishing line.  I know I can stay calm and cut myself out with plenty of time before my body will shut down.

It's for spearing and picking and,I currently go with rock pickers and my days are very limited as you all know that rock pickers go on minus tides.i wanna start diving off my yak so I just wanted more confidence and also it's more curiosity then anything.i bought some long blade fins and was at the lake trying them out.i really like em over the shorter ones, only draw back is if you have to do any type of surface swimming, they are very clumsy feeling.thanks alll

There are three things at play: oxygen quantity, oxygen consumption, and CO2 tolerance.  Increasing oxygen quantity is easy, learn how to take a full breathe.  You can't do much other than that.  Decreasing consumption takes practice, moving slowly underwater, etc.  Increasing CO2 tolerance takes time and dedication. It's painful.  That's your urge to breathe.

You can cheat your CO2 tolerance by hyperventilating.  You purge your body if CO2 so you don't have the urge to breathe.  That can be dangerous because you should be concerned with oxygen levels,  or CO2 levels.

Your CO2 tolerance is the smoke alarm in your kitchen, and cooking is your oxygen consumption.  Hyperventilating is like turning on the fan over the stove.  Just because the alarm isn't going off doesn't mean your not burning your food.

After a 2 day course I had a 3:32 minute static breath hold time.  That increased with practice and repetition.  Dynamic dive times are less due to the work (therefore oxygen use) your body is doing but even so your breath hold time will increase.  I think a course is a good thing too.

i think if anyone is really serious about diving, at any dept should invest in the money for classes. your life is worth more than a few hundreds dollars.
