I think it mostly depends on how long your in the water and how hot you run.

My friend and I both have mako open cell suits mine is a 7mm and his is a 5mm we went diving Saturday I was in the water for about 2 hours and he was in for about an hour. I asked him if he got cold at all and he said no. I personally need some new booties so my feet got a lil cold lol

Cheers

I'm on my 6 th wet suit,
4 have been two piece 7 mm suits and have protected me from the cold as well as the sharp mussels crawling out of the sea.
I use a 2 piece 3 mm for fishing and have to shead the top sometimes from heat.
My dive suit is a 5/6/7/8 xcel polar hyroflex hooded suit.
Very comfy to dive in, all your elbows and knees are the thinner material with the thicker covering your legs and torso. Can be in the water for hours and never come close 2 being cold.
The neck is a little snug with the hood off while paddling.
If you take a kayak to get to your dive spot your going to be very hot
Even with a pre soak. You start warming up get it the water.
It's been the most comfortable suit to dive in. Even when looking at wolf eels at 80-100 ft nice and warm.
This suit is worth a look.
Xcel makes many variations 1-2 piece hooded and no hood with many thicknesses to choose from.
It's a suit Subsurface Progression has in its rentals.
Demo kayaks- demo wet suits.

That's not bad,the ones I found are 375 now.is the inside lined or plain open cell?
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I have a 7mm Yazbek. LOVE IT!
On this particular suit you will not be doubling the thickness at the torso even though it is a 2 piece.
The torso portion of the torso part of the FJ is like a lycra material. Thin. Some people cut it off at the waistline, I left mine attached.
There have been a couple of times I wish I had a 5mm, but I've never been cold in my 7mm. It's a lot easier to cool down than it is to warm up in the ocean.
I totally forget how cold it is until I intentionally allow a little water into the suit...
YIKES!!!!!!
The choice between a 7mm and 5mm is a personal choice. But consider how long you plan on being in the water.
As you become a better and more relaxed diver you will be expending a lot less energy. That translates into less body heat being generated. So what may, at the beginning, feel like a 7mm is too warm, as you become a better diver and settle down in the water it may end up being perfect.
I usee to sweat and feel super hot in a 7 mil, then i relaxed  and became a decent diver and was perfect. DONT GET A 5MM.  My 7mm has turned into a 5mm  after a year of diving and its absolutely miserable after an hour.  Any expirinced diver will tell you 7mm isnt enough for the spring up here. During thr late summer when the water is over 55 you can just start to use a 5mm.  But you can always cool down in the water and cant warm up.

Definitely a good point.  The better diver you are, the less oxygen you consume, the less heat your body creates.  I can only think of one instance that I've ever wanted a 5mm, and that was in Monterey County in the middle of the summer, diving 40' at a 45 degree angle from a ripping current, and I had to keep kicking all day to stay in one spot.

It's easy to cool down - just let a little water flush into the suit. Getting warm again after you've chilled down is really tough if not impossible most days. I've never regretted the 7mm suits.

Good luck,
Brad
